>>7387978
IJ or to kill a mockingbird
>>7387978

Harry Potter if you consider it literature.
Nineteen Eighty-Four otherwise.
>>7387978
Everything Rand wrote. It's not hated enough.

It's a damn children's book. Doubt people are reading to find philosophical values

>>7388151

>>7387978
All of Rilke
>>7388251
>Reading into the post and assuming that it's a remark on why people ought to read a book.
Overrated is the single most infuriating word I've ever encountered. The people who use it seem to have no fucking idea what it means.
>>7387978
Anything by Dickens
>>7387978
The Divine Comedy. Fight me, bro. I have a hard time getting over how fucking petty Dante was.
>>7387978
The Bible
>>7388032
>Nineteen Eighty-Four
This plus Animal Farm. Literal garbage.
Anything by Pessoa
>>7388330
Elegant contribution. Clearly you should be taken seriously.
>>7388390

>>7388566

>>7388432
You know. Catcher in the Rye. Mark David Chapman. Etc.
I don't agree, though. I've always loved Catcher.

>“A few have become acquainted with Orwell’s 1984; because it is both difficult to obtain and dangerous to possess, it is known only to certain members of the Inner Party. Orwell fascinates them through his insight into details they know well, and through his use of Swiftian satire. Such a form of writing is forbidden by the New Faith because allegory, by nature manifold in meaning, would trespass beyond the prescriptions of socialist realism and the demands of the censor. Even those who know Orwell only by hearsay are amazed that a writer who never lived in Russia should have so keen a perception into its life.” - Czesław Miłosz
1984 is too politically important to dismiss
Literally anything by Charles Dickens
The stranger. I have yet to see a decent argument defending its ranking in 20th century literature.

Definition of style over substance
Book is nothing but a soap opera with lots of fluff about random farm trivia
>>7388638
>Definition of style over substance
only plebs think that sentence mean anything
literally as good as litmus test for idiots as the "emperor's new clothes" parable
>>7388646
I bet you enjoy comedy and sci-fi as well
>>7388638
top pleb
>>7388677

>Tolstoi's works serve no higher purpose

I just finished Inherent Vice. I'm so disappointed i fell for the Pynchon meme. That book is just shit man. No characters outside of doc, just hollow caricatures with silly names who offer weird and obfuscated connections to hastily-explained subplots.
I wish i invested my energy in an earlier work like Lot 49 but probably i won't now. I'm now reading 'Giles Goat Boy' by John Barth. I havent heard much about it so I'm excited by it but cautious.
>>7388690
Modern /lit/, everyone.
>>7388708
Its literally just Real Housewives of Miami set back 150 years in literature form
Im not saying its not well written, I'm just saying its the literary equivalent of the Beatles
>>7388690
>He does not even compare to Dostoevsky
That is why "muh prose" plebs like Nabokov like Tolstoy and hate Dosto
>>7388714
>literary equivalent of the beatles
kek
>>7388714
just. stop. posting.
>>7388638
what is style? what is substance?
I'm getting pretty sick of these weaselly non-criticisms. Just express a well thought out and clear opinion or don't express one at all.
>>7388730
Wow so patrician, soccer moms all around the nation apparently have a taste for "high literature".
Get fucked pleb
>>7388750
0/10
>>7388750
You're not very good at this.
So much effort with so little returns.
>>7388750
>anything the pleb masses can consume is below me, I am better than every single person on the face of the earth, if anyone enjoys something I do I am repulsed and immediately find something else to enjoy
>>7388750
>it's popular so it must be bad 2 lamestream xd
nice me.me
“Anna Karenina, Anna Karenina, Anna Karenina" when asked the three best novels of all time.
- William Faulkner
'Anna Karenina. Incomparable prose artistry. The supreme masterpiece of 19th-century literature.'
- Vladimir Nabokov
Tao Lin. Emotionally retarded crap. Writing that disappears up its own ass about characters who have already disappeared up their own ass. It's a Moebius strip of shit.
>>7388414
Yes-motherfucking-sir
>>7388154
Yes. Thoroughly boring.
a recent overrated novel is the game of thrones thing. It is a long, baggy, messy work with a million characters who's only purpose is to die so the reader gets excited.
I have not managed to finish asoif, though.
>>7388629
Came here to post this tbqh
Also Oscar Wilde
>>7388707
>reads Pynchon's worst book
>hates Pynchon as an author
Holy shit you're an idiot
Just read V. already
>>7388622
I don't think I needed 200 something pages to understand why authoritarianism and fascism aren't very fun.
>>7387978
Pynchon, Gatsby, and IJ
Also, it really grinds my gears when uneducated people say "the bible" but clearly have never done any scholarly work at all. It grinds my gears more when the two preachers I know that went to seminary and did do the scholarly work pretend that it doesnt exist for the benefit of their flock
>>7388707
Read Gravity's Rainbow
>>7388707
lmao the prose in Inherent Vice is grade A you fuckin plebathon runner
