Opinions on this book? Thinking of asking for it for Christmas.

Also, any other religious history texts which are must reads? I'm interested in the development of all the major religions.
>>
Funny, I'm reading that exact book in my history of Christianity class.

Fantastic read but only if you're interested in history from the beginning. MacCulloch is never afraid to spend too much time on interesting details that may not carry huge significance which is something I appreciate, also he manages to remain objective while having a distinct voice throughout, something a lot of historians seem to struggle with. He also spends a lot of time delving into some of the more abstract theological concepts, which can be a make or break for a lot of people

Sounds like it'd be up my street then, I quite enjoy the theological aspects and details. I watched the television series which went along with this book but it lacked a little detail (as is to be expected) so I hoped his book would fill in the gaps.

These are all some of the best monographs out there regarding new testament textual criticism. Burton Mack also has "The Myth of Innocence" which is important re: markan priority.

Pic related is a very good history book on the progression of catholicism

Also, Elaine Pagel's work is probably THE most cited short work on gnosticism ive ever seen. Almost every pop history book that is shit out on christianity cites it, and bart ehrman and the yale divinity school draws from it always

The Lord of the Rings and Brideshead Revisited but not Paradise Lost?
>>
>>7385954
Yes. Don't have the updated version on my phone, it has +/- 10 more titles.
>>
Catholic specific list
>>
>>7385895
Needs to include that it is a Catholic list, not a general Christian one
>>
>>7385985
Catholicism and Eatern Orthodoxy are the only 2 forms of Christianity that are even possibly correct. Martin Luther may have had very good and sincere reasons behind his 95 theses, but contemporary Protestantism is theological garbage that goes in the bin.
>>
>>7385992
Your point?
>>
>>7385993
No point besides that Catholicism shouldn't need to be separated from Christianity, as if Catholics are the heretics and born-again snake-handling American protestants are true followers of Christ.
>>
>>7386002
I'm not suggesting Catholicism is separate from Christianity--just that a Catholic list should be called a Catholic list. OP wanted religious histories, and that list should have been called Catholic so OP would know that it would help with Catholicism in particular, but not Orthodoxy or Protestantism.
>>
>>7386018
Not him but ops request for books on all religions is way to wide

I'm reading Tolstoy's The Gospel in Brief. It's a great introduction, I think, to anyone who is curious about the teachings of the The New Testament.
>>
>>7386309
Read The Kingdom of God is Within You.
>>
>>7386312
The Kingdom of God is Within You is a key text for Tolstoyan, nonviolent resistance, and Christian anarchist movements.[2]
>Christian anarchist movements

Hmmmm... I'll look into it...
>>
>>7386309
Tolstoy was hardly mainline with the Orthodox church. One should keep that in mind.
>>
>>7386336
Yeah, I noticed in the preface that he talked about "the church's strange interpretations." Not quite sure where his interpretations deviate from theirs.

It never ceases to amaze me how North and South American protestants are so obsessed with the Old Testament, Jewish God; this kinda of over-protective and all-knowing metaphysical babysitter.

Should be the other way around.
>>
>>7386368
that's nothing to do with my point--I just suggested calling it a Catholic list to avoid confusion for OP
>>
>>7386336
>Tolstoy was hardly mainline with the Orthodox church.

To put it mildly. Saint John of Kronstadt regularly prayed for his death.
>>
>>7386351
He denied the gpodhood of Christ. He was essentially not a Christian by the end of his life

He identifies Jesus as the son of God in the book.
>>
>>7387808
He changed that up so I don't think his works should be read as an authorative interpretation.
>>
>>7387036
It's a collection of his German sermons and Latin scripture interpretations. The sermons are only titled by number, with his first and fourth sermons being hte most important
