Poetry if you're reading french (Contemplations is elder god tier)
If you gotta go with the prose, Les Miserables and Notre-Dame de Paris.

Is his french much more difficult that nowadays french?

The same really, unless by nowadays french you mean shitty beach & train novels. Hugo's not the guy who's gonna send you to the dictionnary and he doesn't write those Proust-tier 3 page multipropositionnal sentences, he has a simple yet beautiful prose. I'd say with Flaubert, he's your guy if you're planning to read your first big frenchie in the original text.

Thanks a lot, I'm actually learning french right now, so I guess when I feel ready to read a book in the language I'll try Victor Hugo then.

prose>poetry
everytime

Not in french buddy. French poets used to be so good they were better wordsmiths than prose stylists, with more constraints.

Not a bad choice, but if reading him is too hard you can always give Flaubert or Maupassant a try.
