Read good books and discuss good books. The latter is not necessary but helps. That's it.
First, buy a wardrobe of SECONDHAND (this is important, consumerist pig) oversize sweaters and skinny jeans + sandals. learn to subsist on coffee, sardines and bread. develop a crippling addiction to adderall and ecstasy. snort some of tao lin's dandruff. never read or write. congratulations, you are now living the /lit/erary lifestyle

Be like this.

Maybe I'm taking the bait in a big way, but here's a somewhat serious answer.
1. Be very selective in your social engagements. Time spent with people that are not good for you is time not spent reading or writing or otherwise improving yourself. Socializing also costs money.
2. Get a job which leaves you time to read and write. If you have a regular old 40 hours a week day shift job, all the time you would spend 'unwinding' after work by either watching TV or hanging out is now your reading and writing time.
3. Read and write. Start with the Greeks if you must.
4. You cannot live a hedonistic life unless you are ridiculously gifted. The record shows that most successful authors lived stable lives, didn't do all that much drugs, and worked consistently and diligently.
5. Live modestly. This also ties in with choosing your social engagements carefully. Being social costs a lot of money. The money you save can go to life experiences that may enrich your writing such as traveling. It can also support you while you get off the ground if you want to go full freelancer.
6. A funded MFA is a good way to write for 2 years free from career/job worries.
7. Be sure you want this.
If you go all in, that potentially means you will have missed out on promotions at work (because you couldn't make yourself available for overtime or work hangouts etc.) and you may have missed out on friendships and relationships.
If you're in your early 20s, some of your college educated friends may very well be doing things like tripping balls in exotic locales, drinking expensive coffee in chic cafes, and fucking hot bitches on the side –some of the things a naive person thinks writers do – as they work their fairly compensated and glamorous jobs in banking or tech.
You might not publish a single thing to show for it either.
