Well, I just finished reading this comfy masterpiece. I liked it. What is your opinion on this book?

Comfy masterpiece

What's with this "comfy" meme? What does it even mean?
>>
>>7357803
Just like desu means To Be Honest, comfy means comfortable
>>
>>7357803
It's not a meme. It's the adjective for that feeling when you're snuggled up in a warm house as snow piles up against your windows and it's dark out but the moon's light reflects off of the snow giving the room in which you're reading a nice glow. A comfy book is usually not really complicated but just plain good, if it involves autumn/winter settings all the better.

Which should I read first, Martin Eden or The Sea Wolf, lads?

Are you being serious?

Martin Eden is a huge piece of shit. It is melodramatic and flowery to a fault, the book is entirely a prolix failure (even London went on to say absolutely no-one got the message he intended from it) and why it retains any relevance is beyond me. It is literally a pretentious self-insert meant to combat the philosophies of the day (Nietzsche) that the author took issue with.

Now the the Sea Wolf on the other hand...it has merit. That's not to say it is good...the ending is utterly abysmal. And this is made worse by the fact that the first half of the book is fantastic and birthed probably London's most tremendous literary feat, the character of Wolf Larsen. The villain being so compelling makes what London does to the book a true tragedy. And so I caution any would be readers, the story sails over a cliff the moment London ham-fistedly introduces a love interest to fulfill some ridiculous plot line that is completely incongruous with the established story and thoroughly unseats a potential masterpiece.
"Do you know, I am filled with a strange uplift; I feel as if all time were echoing through me, as though all powers were mine. know truth, divine good from evil, right from wrong. My vision is clear and far. I could almost believe in God. But," -- and his voice changed and the light went out of his face, -- "what is this condition in which I find myself? this joy of living? this exultation of life? this inspiration, I may well call it? It is what comes when there is nothing wrong with one's digestion, when his stomach is in trim and his appetite has an edge, and all goes well. It is the bribe for living, the champagne of the blood, the effervescence of the ferment -- that makes some men think holy thoughts, and other men to see God or to create him when they cannot see him. That is all, the drunkenness of life, the stirring and crawling of the yeast, the babbling of the life that is insane with consciousness that it is alive. And -- bah! To- morrow I shall pay for it as the drunkard pays. And I shall know that must die, at sea most likely, cease crawling of myself to be all acrawl with the corruption of the sea; to be fed upon, to be carrion, to yield up all the strength and movement of my muscles that it may become strength and movement in fin and scale and the guts of fishes. Bah! And bah! again. The champagne is already flat. The sparkle and bubble has gone out and it is a tasteless drink."

Wolf Larsen is one of the best characters I've ever encountered, period.
>>
>>7358043
It reads like some written by bored Victorian ladies for bored Victorian ladies.
>>
>>7357815

If you read just White Fang, read the Call of the Wild next.
>>
>>7358043
Don't listen to him, Martin Eden is like a non-shitty version of the great gatsby. True, it is traditional (doesn't go pushing any buttons) and very accessible, but there are still good thematic exploration of individualism, mechanism, etc. And Brissenden is a very unique character.

That said, Sea Wolf is still the more "literary" piece, if only because of Wolf Larsen. But Martin eden is still very worth it

maybe at the time it was written it was a 'tremendous literary feat' or a 'potential masterpiece' but the character of wolf larsen is 3edgy5me shit and the plot is recycled as well

>an ordinary uninspired character is whisked away from ennui to an alien and frightening environment and is coached by an aloof and condescending other through the hardships of adventure in a new world. this other disappears at the moment of the protagonist's self-actualization

im willing to bet this sounds familiar. far more complex characters are developed to greater death by other authors of london's time and before

The entirety of the prose is purple..and yet it still manages to be totally trite and insipid. Martin Eden was bad for its time, but is atrocious in the modern age.

>Eden differs from London in that Eden rejects socialism, attacking it as "slave morality", and relies on a Nietzschean individualism. In a note to Upton Sinclair, London wrote, "One of my motifs, in this book, was an attack on individualism (in the person of the hero). I must have bungled, for not a single reviewer has discovered it."

Good! I read it recently too, I love taking the savagery prose on board and thinking of the story as a man who hones himself into some fucked up primal being.

Hollywood should take it on board and just swap all of the wolves out for people in some Apocalypto style film. Call of the Wild and White Fang feel very post apocalypse survivalist style, and I adore that shit.

Has anyone read Jack Londons 'The Iron Heel?' Or 'Scarlett Plague?' Should I go looking for them?
