Why is notes from underground narrator/protagonist such a coward, blaming others, living contradiction and victimizing himself every chance he gets?

but he was right about everything

But he's so miserable.. I pitied him so much... Why is he like that? He couldn't accept his reality? It bugs me so much especially because my brother is exactly like him

That's the whole point of the book. What do you mean "why"? It's a cautionary tale about how miserable misanthropy is.

He felt inferior to his peers, and his method of coping was to deem himself superior as a result of his inferiority. He's too good for society because he's not good enough, nobody understands him because the only ones who are capable of it would view him in the same way that he views those who don't.

To answer your question about your brother though, you'd have to think back to your childhood to find out why. How many girlfriends did he have growing up in comparison to you or your other siblings? How often did your parents shower him with affection, how were his birthdays compared to your other siblings or other kids? How "cool" were his friends in school? Childhood experiences and the behaviors learned as a result of those experiences are the oldest behaviors and habits we have, and thus the hardest to unlearn. I'm a bit drunk right now, maybe a more articulate anon will elaborate on what I'm trying to say in a way that's easier to understand.

Sorry for the rant, but you should look up Pavlov's dogs. Psychology is a babby science in my opinion, and there's a lot of speculation and assumptions made that aren't proven yet are taken as fact, but classical conditioning is legit, and an understanding of that coupled with your knowledge of your brothers life experiences will help you help him better than an anon on here ever could. Just remember friend, don't try to slap a personality disorder or simplify his pain by saying he's the "underground man". It's fucking offensive, he might be similar to somebody else or happen to have some symptoms of a mental illness, but he's more than a character or a mental illness, he's your fucking brother, and he's infinitely deeper than any novella character, no matter how well their written. The human psyche is complicated, don't simplify it or you're going to look like a fucking moron and you're never gonna help your brother. God speed brother, I'm going to drink the rest of my jack and fuck a hooker bareback, because I'm a human bean and not a piano key.

Dostoyevsky actually rescued me from /r9k/ and got me into literature. I never in a million years imagined that a novel, let alone a 150 something year old one written in another language on the other side of the world by a Christian socialist would make me relate to a character, and yeah, even fucking weep for them, but it did. It was a humbling experience that opened my eyes to the intrinsic value of literature and has made me much less bitter and accepting of other people, no matter how much we may differ. I mean, I'm still self-destructive as hell, but sometimes I'm happy, and that's something I could've never said before Notes.

Sorry lad, in comparison to something like chemistry, psychology is babbling tier.
>why do people do what they do (ie. shoot up a school)
"Well because they possess this personality disorder that makes them statistically more likely to commit such and such atrocity."
>why do water be like it does
"Because an Oxygen atom and two Hydrogen atoms have bonded"

See the difference lad? Science is able to replicate with almost complete consistency (given the money and equipment) the formation of a water molecule, but psychology isn't at the point where it's developed enough to compel a person to shoot up a school with anywhere near the same consistency.
