Did the whole time Slothrop was at the Casino remind anyone else of Mondaugen's story from V?
On a broader level, Slothrop seems to be the archetypal Pynchon character of the book, on the same lines as Stencil, Oedipa, Doc Sportello. For no real reason I've assumed this is Pynchon the character/his version of himself, so that's how I always imagine the characters in my mind.

Slothrop is way more Benny than Stencil, even if their quests don't align.
I'd also say I think Slothrop's stay on the Anubis is a far better parallel to Foppl's siege. Aristocratic decadency and escapism. While you could argue the same for Casino Hermann Goreing but to me that's a more deserved retreat for allied soldiers eventually ruined by internal forces like Pointsman and Scammony. The Anubis is hedonism at its most nightmarish right in the center of The Zone's horrors.

Slothrop is probably the most directly Pynchon character of all his works. All the family stuff is straight out of his own genealogy, I recall something about his own ancestor having written an essay called "On Preterition"
