Humans felt emotions about all of those things. Shakespeare never saw millions die in wars eventually settled in arbitration, or cavalry in polished brass, swords drawn, mown down by machine-guns. Shakespeare never felt what a man who'd lost his legs to polio must feel when he learns that the disease is no more. Shakespeare never feared that a disease would seek out and destroy him and everyone else who engaged in homosexual acts. Shakespeare never saw a man destroy thousands of years of culture for the sake of an idea, or a vibrant oriental city vaporized in an instant by a bunch of nerds who just wanted to go home and stop having to do math in the desert. He couldn't have conceived of these things, but they all draw out very strong emotions in people. Our present condition is largely a product of confusion because these feelings are so conflicting and new. Postmodern fiction basically proves my point.

My point is right there. Sure, if you want to be reductionist about it, the emotions are the same, but Shakespeare didn't just characters the saddest or angriest ever. He used clever plotting to set up internal conflicts the audience doesn't expect, but real life offers up framing beyond Shakespeare's experience.
