How do you write sex scenes without turning your book in a porno novel?
>>
>>7312231
make it gross or comedic
>>
Downplay its intimacy. Most sex scenes in literary fiction paint sex as pointless, mundane, horrifying, or simply disappointing.
>>
>>7312231
Literary sex is either non-satisfying or non-consensual. If you write positively about sex, it's porn.
>>
By not being a Christian.
>>
>>7312231

Why wouldn't you want it to be titillating? Would it not fit with the narrative or what?

In general, make it as engaging as possible. Using sex for that is a cheap trick, but to actively avoid making it engaging as to not be seen as a user of cheap tricks is inauthentic as fuck.
>>
Threads like this are almost as retarded as threads asking how to write a female
>>
I read somwthing some time ago about not using words like 'penis', 'vagina', 'sucked', 'licked', or 'penetrated'. Readers are not stupid. If you write about two people kissing and getting naked, everybody knows what's going to happen. Talk about how does it feel, not about how it is done.
>>
Try writing based on experience, OP, and if for some reason you can't do that, then just copy other authors who use sex in their fiction.
>>
>>7312231

Im reading this one book where thers a fucking hottie red head, the main character manages to charm her by not giving a fuck.
Ready for hot steamy sex scene, and the book cuts to black, it just sais they embrace. Then they wake up the few hours later. FUCKING BULLSHIT.
>>
>>7312253
There is nothing wrong with including visual detail in a scene if that's the way you want to write it, just as there's nothign wrong with doing so in any scene involving a common human activity
>>
I rly don't see why people worry about this. Is it just becuase they're afraid that getting the reader all horned up will distract from whatever else they're trying to do with the scene, or what
>>
>>7312231
>all of the hipster as fuck responses itt
Fucking faggots all of you. The best way to write about sex is to simply put personal physical experiences to work and describe in the general linguistic style of your overall work. Neuromancer is a great example of this internal consistency.
>>
>>7312270
Ive never had sex, what does is it like?
>>
>>7312278
It's about what you'd expect.
>>
>>7312278
For you will be like poop, but backwards
>>
>>7312278
Wet, warm, physically illogical, an insane drive to act, felling a limb that's in a slightly uncomfortable position and not caring. A rush, abundance, chemical flood, desire to do everything that can stimulate your sense. It's not unlike the elation one feels during a fistfight or when running from the police. Sex is a steady pumping, defined by how erratic it is. Animal, every cell crying out in unison as if at a rock concert (substitute musical even of you preference/thematically appropriate musical event)
>>
>>7312231

If the scene is about the sex, and just about the sex, it's porn. If it's about something else, like if it provide character development, it's literary. If you make the scene just about the sex but are trying to make it literary, like what you're doing, it's crap. Not even porn. But if you make the scene just about the sex and try to make it literary but do it ironically, it's post modern.
>>
>>7312288
I've never been in a fistfight, run from the police or gone to a concert, so this doesn't help me at all!
>>
>>7312294
Question. What about indirect sex used to flesh out a certain element of the world/characters, but doesn't expressly develop them.
>>
>>7312299
Ok, let me paraphrase then.

>It's something you'll know about when you grow up.
Now take that sentence and what it would mean to a child. Think about the expected physical emotion hiding behind finding that out. The intense desire for something and the feeling one EXPECTS to have when receiving that something. Well sex is that, but in duality. It can either be exactly as high as that expected, unknown feeling or as disappointing as reality usually tends to be.
>>
>>7312300
Character a was banging character b.
There established 2 people fuckign without being porn.
>>
>>7312308
That's porn.
>>
I quite like the way Bataille writes sex. Story of the Eye is pretty literary for porn and kinda Kafkaesque in its way.
>>
>>7312308
Literally nothing do to with what I asked. Why did I even assume anyone on /lit/ can read.
>>
>>7312306
What if you go in without expecting anything?
>>
>>7312231
Why are they fucking?
If it's just for fun what does it tell us about the people involved?
If it's just to get the audiences rocks off then it doesn't need to be there.
>>
>>7312300

I don't know what you mean by indirect sex, but I think it would work. The thing with porn is that it's only element is its eroticism. It's only about making the reader/viewer get off. If you're trying to make them feel an emotion, or learn some new information, or change their opinion on something, it isn't porn, far from it, even if the reader/viewer cums.
>>
>>7312231
You don't, kek.

Just make it noted that the deed happen.
>>
>>7312319
Horny is an emotion
>>
>>7312269
Someone pls answer this question
>>
>>7312315
See, that's not what I told you though. I specifically focused on the child, because that's the exact animal curiosity which creates the expectation of elation, which is what drives the action of expressing curiosity.

I'll repeat.
>child wants something/to know something
>child has this internal expectation of how amazing it will feel to know/have the thing, not a conscious expectation(very important)
>sex can feel either exactly as the expectation or like the reality, based on factors

I'm sure you've been a child and been curious about things, well, sex can either feel like all of your curiosities being satisfied in an instant explosion or how getting a curiosity satisfied actually feels.
>>
>>7312322

Whatever.
>>
>>7312319
Well, for example like sense-stim cybersex or telekinetic sex, or psychomancy sex, but written in a titillating way, but used to flesh out the world/characters.
>>
>>7312327
Wow, but children shouldn't be having sex
>>
>>7312311
Sex, written sexily for the purpose of sexily describing sex, can be very literary. Demonstration is often a component of deconstruction, and sex is a great way to demonstrate and therefore comment on pleasure, evolution, desire, gender roles, power, alpha/beta social dynamics, the animal nature of (hu)man, the effects of internet porn, the implications of internet porn, young middle class white male beta uprising anti-Chad frustration, purity, the role of religion, the role of government, and a host of other themes. Just because most literary literature is written by or for the kind of frumpy MFA owners one tries not to imagine having sex doesn't mean there's some kind of rule by which writing can't be both fappably erotic and literarily valuabe (whatever that means).
>>
>>7312334
Guess I was being baited all along.
>>
>>7312336
Master baited ;)
>>
>>7312335
Nope, that's all porn.
>>
>>7312339
>>7312335
>>7312322
>>7312320
Why does it matter if it's porn or literary or if it achieves something?
>>
>>7312344
The main point of >>7312335 is that the distinction between literature and erotica, much like the distinction between high brow and low brow, does not really exist for people who can think beyond labels.
>>
>>7312352
Thinking beyond labels is impossible.
>>
>>7312353
That's not true. You can use labels without thinking IN labels.
>>
>>7312353
go to bed, Chomsky
>>
Why are you describing the sex scene in detail? If you can't answer with anything besides "it will be hot" then you are just trying to write shitty erotic fiction.

I'd be inclined to just have a short paragraph with one or two details. Nothing explicit.
>>
>>7312368
To emphasize character traits.
>>
>>7312371

Uh huh, how are you going to do that in a way that requires in depth description of how he fucked her?

Again a paragraph with the important elements without the steamy fucking is probably the best way to go. I don't think anybody has ever written a good sex scene.
>>
>>7312374
I don't think you read much.
>>
>>7312381

Feel free to give a few examples of good literary fucking. Even one. I'm genuinely curious.
>>
>>7312386

>>7312388

Yeah, it's really great stuff. Did you read this when you were 14 by any chance? Next you'll be recommending de Sade.

I think you could do very good erotic scenes. I think you could use sexual imagery to make great poetry. I can even see a well written erotic novel happening. But describing the actual mechanics of sex? It's like describing the mechanics of taking a shit or eating. I doubt it can be done well at all, and I doubt you have an example up your sleeve.

Prove me wrong though. I just don't see how it could work though.
>>

>>7312433

I'm afraid you're just being a teenager boy. Seems to me that it is being written intentionally not to be beautiful. It's kind of interesting, especially in context. I'm not exactly floored or impressed by its construction though.
>>
>>7312278
I had sex before masturbation and it's quite a different feeling, as a hand is rough in comparison to the softness of a vagina. For me it starts as a pleasurable softness, yet I have to concentrate on not coming early. The motion is also more tiring and I find that the whole process takes a lot more thought than simple jerking.

Have we been in this position too long? How close are you to coming?
Are you hitting the right spot? Is she enjoying it?
What position are we going to do next?

Perhaps others can become mindless during sex but I'm constantly in thought and I find not being in the moment a real hindrance. Women often ask whether I'm enjoying myself and I can't always say that I am due to the mental exertion turning it into a chore. I feel that relaxation is a key component of sex, yet unlike masturbation you can't just lie back and let things go. Anyway, back to the act.

Specific events make sex uniquely enjoyable. The wet squelching as her body physically confirms she's liking it. The tingle you feel when you're actually inside someone else. The unexpected sensation of her cradling your balls. You're both trying to drag yourselves into the moment and become a fleshy ball of pleasure. This can be what makes finishing up sometimes particularly disappointing and is often why people just pump and dump.

This is all really very clunky writing and turned into a life story of sorts. In fact I don't think I'm in a position to talk about this as, despite having fucked about 20 people, I haven't enjoyed the experience yet.
>>
>>7312231
shroud the pornographic imagery in poetic language, similes and allusions (warning: might turn out purple as fuck)

Yeah, this. IME, 9/10 times, the responsibility for good sex falls on the shoulders of the man.
>>
>>7312231
dont
pre-face having a drink, immediately go into smoking cig, taking a shower
write about how characters feel about the sex they have
>>
>>7312231
Make the sex scene implicit.
In literature like in movies there is no need to show a sex scene unless you want to appeal to a certain audience.

Funny, the few times I've had sex I found it really hard to come, even having to masturbate to do it. Meanwhile when I jack of I can go down in just a couple minutes.

It's when a man and a woman lose them self in each other. All barriers are broken down and each partner exists only for the sake of the sexual pleasure of the other. It's really great and a totally different way to understand someone. A very primal, natural way of relating to someone. The sweat, the grunting and moaning, body fluids, cumming on someone -- it's definitely something everyone needs to experience

Don't spend too much unnecessary time describing the details. What you tell should somehow either move the plot or develop the characters or be significant in some way. Be somewhat vague, but don't fall to the trap of overly poetic purple prose.
You can still make it hot, just keep it non-porographic. Describe feelings and emotions, sensations rather than actions.

I think the more important question is how to find good pornographic /lit/
>>
I read a book once that had an unexpected, incredibly graphic depiction of a gay sex scene, all viewed by a young girl who is just as horrified as the reader is (supposed to be). It was so shocking that I actually had one hand over my face the entire time, utterly unable to stop reading, in a way that put even the most dramatic of moments in other books to shame. You can make as many jokes about my (hetero)sexuality as you want, but I'd never seen anything like it before, and I'd never be brave enough to do it myself. God that was some fucked-up shit.
>>
>>7320284

Reading Narcissus and Goldmund right now OP. Half way through the book the guy just starts boning girls from all over the world and it doesn't read like a porno at all.

It's called The Folly of the World, really deserves a lot more credit but I think anyone who's read it is too afraid to admit they did to people that they actually know. The humour is very sick, for lack of a better word.
