Yes. I read Growth of the Soil back in January and it's still by far the best thing I've read all year.

Hamsun is top-tier only read four of his but they were all stellar apart from Hunger which didn't really do much 4me

Mysteries > Growth of the Soil > Pan > Hunger

GotS would be higher if not for the srong overtones of Nazism

Growth of the Soil was published in 1917. That Goebells wound up liking it doesn't mean it has strong overtones of Nazism. The Nazi Party didn't exist when he wrote it.

I can't even get a copy of Growth of the soil in my own language(dutch). It's hard to get copies of his older books

>le Nazi were EVIL!

Firstly, how much of a petty pleb do you have to be to judge a work of literature according to political criteria?

Secondly, you clearly don't know anything about national socialism, and only unthinkingly accept the notion of them being the archetypal "evil regime" or some kind of racist and genocidal organization. Abstain from commenting on things of which you are ignorant, or else you'll look like the idiotic moron that you are.

How's your English? I was pleased with the Lyngstad translation. It's not a very challenging book. The language is plain and simple for the most part. If you can find it, I recommend reading that translation.

I really loved the August-triology. Hunger was great too but I don't know how it works in translation.

Growth of the Soil is great, and if you liked that I would recommend Trygve Gulbranssen's "Beyond sing the woods".

On Overgrown Paths is also very interesting, I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Hamsun as a person and his relation with nazism, and how he was treated in post-war Norway.

Awesome, I stumbled on it on amazon and thought it looked good, but wasn't sure.

Not OP, but thanks for the recommendations. After reading a bit about it, I'm definitely going to read Beyond Sing the Woods.

I've read the Landstryker-trilogy (August as someone called it), Hunger, Victoria and Growth of the Soil. Have Pan right here, but not started it yet. Too busy with other books atm.

Any of his that resembles Hunger? Did he even write another novel in first person?

I've been recommending Gulbranssen quite a couple of times here on /lit/. At his time, he was a best-selling author and his books were even included in the White House library if I recall right. He was also one of Hitler's favorite authors though, so even when he constantly distanced himself from Nazism he's gotten a bad rep because of it.

På Gjenngrodde Stier is the only one in first person that I know of, but it's more a memoir than a novel. You can draw a lot of paralels between it and Hunger though, which is interesting. Or to say it like Hamsun: Ringen slutter.

tss were his parents pigs or sumthin
