Where do I start with the Marquis de Sade and similar philosophers?
He wasn't a philosopher
>him
>philosopher
At least not in the same sense of the word as it is applied to Plato, Kant and so forth, but I think his best 'philosophical' work was the one which was about philosophy in bedroom. I can't remember the title, but it was the less overly vulgar, edgy work that he crafted to shock everyone, most of it being pretty dry and boring once you get over the fact that much of it is extremely disgusting and abhorrent. I didn't even read most of 120 Days of Sodom as you could cut away entire sections from it and the work would neither fall in quality or improve as indeed it is quite literally trash, and I'm not saying this because I am concerned with morality or the lack of it, rather his mode of writing and the insistence on being an edgy fuck all the while managing to be a bore.
If you want to read somewhat of a libertine, try Casanova's memoirs. That is very good stuff, through out the entirety of it. He is much more cultured, interesting and intelligent. His life was also much more interesting, if you compare the both, and Casanova was the man of his time par excellence, while de Sade was almost an idiot.
