Pictures of authors
I just saw this photo of James Joyce on the NYRB website. I'd never seen it before. I don't know why I feel so uncomfortable about it. Maybe it's because I'm so used to seeing Joyce in the common authorial poses that anything that strays from that is peculiar.

You shoukd have called it rare pictures of authors OP
Joyce's eyepatch or Wilde's swagger for best authorial aesthetics?
>>6385866
Eyepatch
>>6385861
I really dropped the ball on this. I'm sorry, man. I was too captivated by Joyce to get the thread right.
>>6385866
Joyce is aesthetic as fuck. Wilde was just a poof.
Virginia Woolf in blackface. She's the one on the left.
It is a cool picture, what is he doing?
He looks like a depressed pirate that got invited to a wedding but got lost, had to go cross country, tore his good trousers on some barbed wire, had to borrow some slacks from a boating team. Now he is sitting around sad that he missed Angelica McTeagle's wedding to Samuel Carnform, only the most prestigious pirate wedding that Devon has seen for 50 years. But any moment now he will be interrupted by the Smaels family, and although they will laugh at his claims to be a dangerous pirate and significant modernist author, they will embark on an adventure together to reclaim Angelica's necklace from a desert island off the coast of Zurich.
>>6385887
YOU IGNORE WHAT THE WORD "AESTHETIC" MEANS.
>>6385930
I was using it in the /fit/ sense
Allegedly this is George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway. I'm dubious myself, although the picture was used as the front cover for the Penguin Modern Classics edition of Homage to Catalonia.
>>6385993
Bollocks, forgot my pic.
>>6386005

Apparently Hemingway is the tall guy in the glasses at the back who can be barely seen. Also seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway#/media/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-84600-0001,_Ivens_und_Hemingway_bei_Ludwig_Renn,_Chef_der_XI._Internationalen_Brigaden.jpg
No one else there looks remotely like Orwell, the tallest guy in this picture.

That's a cruel prank to play on a blind man.

I thought that fridge was two cardboard boxes, like Borges friends would take his money to buy him furniture and just give him cardboard boxes instead.
>>6386005
Black face wasn't considered racist until the 40's, mate. Back then the only racism was when the state isolated and exploited you for your race, like they did with the irish.

Young Mark Twain
>>6386044
If that photo was taken in Argentina, I wouldn't be shocked if it was just two cardboard boxes
I don't think the pic above is of Orwell, but this one is. You can see him as the tall bloke right at the back.

Pynchon
Does anyone have a photograph of Eliot where he doesn't look like a week old corpse?
>>6386162
generic insult, probably self deprecation. ignore that kind of stuff.
>>6385851
This photo was actually taken after one of his eye surgeries. He is actually as depressed and distraught as he appears...
Just think about getting eye surgery in 1922...

He was also really poor and was having a hard time publishing his magnum opus

ehhh... the cig trend is dying down. Maybe it was cool in the 90s even, but if you look at culture -both subculture and main- cigs are no longer portrayed as something cool and edgy.

>>6392051

>>6391993

>>6389609
Sartre is confirmed
>>6392060
>>6392065
Cigarettes are in part cool because of the fact that they kill you. Indifference is cool, and indifference to death is the ultimate form of indifference.
The other aspect that's missing from e-cigs is the element of lighting. Lighting a cigarette is akin to the cocking of a gun. It's just a cool action that draws attention. E-cigs are like weird midget hookahs.
>>6391496
>cigs are no longer portrayed as something cool and edgy.
No, they're portrayed as filth and poverty-tier. It's funny how quickly cigarettes went from cool to ok to pestilential.
>>6392112
>Cigarettes are in part cool because of the fact that they kill you. Indifference is cool
Indifference might be cool but paying someone lots of money to kill you is just stupid. Face it man, they're not cool anymore. They're trashy. They're like tramp stamps.
>>6385851
Who's that in the back?
>>6392134
They were always for poor people. But cool poor people. Like soldiers in the trenches hiding the light with the palm or hobo writers sharing a crumpled last cigarette or factory workers taiking a break from working their lives away for the nation. Poverty is less glamorous now.
>>6392134
Then what's become Cigarettes v2.0? We've already dismissed e-cigs. Reefer is inexorable with the defiant teenager crowd.
I figure cigarettes are a coolness multiplier. If you've already got inherent cool, it's going to make you cooler, but if you're >>6392134 you look like a fucking tool.
