I'll move to Moscow in September. I'd like to know Russians better by then, so I'm looking for books about Russian history and culture, preferably either in English or Hungarian.

Read War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment(interchangeable with Brothers Karamazov), Dead Souls and Chekovs stories and plays(specifically the Cherry Orchard). They're the quintessential classics of Russian lit, and most Russians read them in high school so unless they're bydlos they'll know at least a bit about them. Even if it ends up not helping you dig deep into the crevices of the Slavic soul, at least Russians will be impressed by how well-read and patrish you are.
Also, they're just really good.
>>
>Moving to Russia

that is an incorrect thing to do
>>
>>7791713

idk, I'd love to live in Moscow for a year or two

how come you're going there, op?
>>
>>7791717
>>7791713
>an incorrect thing to do
not incorrect, since the university which I'd like to attend is actually in Moscow. I'm planning to spend 2 years there.

>>7791704
I'm familiar with Russian classics, I made this thread hoping that I'll get non-fiction recommendations. But thank you anyway.
>>
>>7791734
Let me dissuade you before you take a step that you're going to regret for a long time. Do no go to Russia for education. There's a reason everyone there tries to study abroad. Their universities are shit, especially the larger ones in Moscow and St. Petersburg. You have to pay bribes to everyone including the janitor, know how to work the system (believe me, you don't) to get anywhere, have be prepared to deal with crazy chechens, and not to mention the subpar level of education you'll be getting. Don't do it. Also, almost all the post-soviet countries are shit. Don't go there.
>>
Good choice, OP. I also moved to Russia a few years ago but to St. Petersburg. Let me know if you want to come over for a few drinks.
>>
>>7792205
>know how to work the system
I'm about to start an MSc in Nuclear Engineering for foreign students. The lectures will be English, the tuition fee and dormitory is paid for by a company I intend to work for.

>subpar level of education you'll be getting
The education program is designed to fit their future needs and the diploma I'll get is approved by EU standards.

>post-soviet countries are shit
I'm from the east side of the Iron Curtain anyways.

>>7792233
I'll definitely visit Petersburg Leningrad . I've already found a map with the locations mentioned in C&P.

Well, if you read the OP, you'll notice he's clearly hungarian.

OP here. I've just came back from the Russian Institute and my application has been accepted, so I'll definitely move to Moscow. Besides the requested books, I'd appreciate any advice about moving to/living in Moscow as a foreigner.

>>7794790
I've seen it at /b/ and I found it funny so I saved it.

i keep hearing that word but people who drop always fail to name anything that is not their detested tier by now to me it just someone shouting "look how I am illiterate!"

I second Pelevin and any Pelevin will work. It's part Delillo part Murakami part Pynchon; usually involving middle class characters in Moscow and there will be cyberpunk, french philololololosophers like, say, Debord along with vampires, modern art galleries, hindu/buddhist sutras, leninism, western (and japanese) pop culture and conspiracy theories. If you just wanna see what pelevin is like get his short stories like "Pinapple Water" collection but otherwise take a novel like the one that was named or any other.

Sorokin does violent porn with political undertones. I wouldn't get his "Day of the Opritchnik" novel since it's mostly just sadistic porn with political and cultural reference you will not understand, however his "Monoclone" collection has sadistic porn with insights into Russian culture.

If you want Russian contemporary culture but without the porn, there is Zahar Prilepin although he lost some weight in the reading demographic for jumping the muh-crimea bandwagon.

I couldn't agree more.

As far as your recommendations go, I'll check them, especially Pelevin.
>>
>>7794938
While you're at it, try Dariya Donzova.

Why the fuck would someone go to Russia voluntarily?

Didn't read that post, apologies. Seems like pretty good reasons. Good luck, anon.

I'd guess that immersion in Russian media would be a nice addition to your course, just listening to the radio and television programs to get a sense of the everyday use of the language.

When you're in Spb make sure that you go to a bar called Spieler. Dosto already hung out there and the beer is cheap and the (german) food good.

Man, all the books above are just not right choice. Believe me. You may not trust me right now, but just check "The Sky Above Hell and other stories by Yuri Manleev".
It's the basics.
>>
OP please check back in two years so I know whether you've been cyka blyat'd to death or not.
>>
>>7795278
I'm not worried. I play a lot of Dota, so if I were to be cyka blyat'd to death evere, it should have been happened already.

inb4 I won't post on /lit/ from Russia. But sure I'll check back.
>>
>>7795278
Russia is not such a rough place like you people might think, trust me.
>>
>>7795293
Scary times with international affairs as they are and oil prices fucking up the economy though.
>>
Read Broccoli and Other Tales of Food and Love by Lara Vapnyar. She moved from Moscow to New York, and these stories - if nothing else - will teach you a little about their cultural cuisine.
>>
>>7795295
I meant living in Russia is not as bad. I've been here for more than 5 years and I never had any trouble with the locals although I lived and hung out in some of the seemingly more ghetto places.

learn to speak Russian. culture can be very relative thing and you won't learn shit from books.don't expect anyone to be punctual and learn the subway map

I'm starting a Russian course next month.

>won't learn shit from books
I strongly disagree.

>don't expect anyone to be punctual and learn the subway map
a legit advice, thanks.

On the subject of subways: There's a Russian book called Metro 2033, it's quite popular here. At first glance, it seems more like some genre-crap than worthy literature. Yet it may be an easy and exciting book for someone who's reading his first book in Russian. Any thoughts on that?
