What do you propose we do with old books? Why should we archive everything, no matter how antiquated or outdated its notions or ideology may be?

At some point, isn't is time to trim the fat?
>>
That's just it, though, there's no need to trim the fat when storage capacity is practically infinite.
At this point, it's not worth calling it 'fat.'

But have you seen some of the shit we publish? Its beyond trite. Archival still requires some effort on the part of the archivist to maintain and order properly.

How do you seperate the wheat from the chaff?

We are already seeing this happen with the internet. The internet used to be filled with useful scientific information, but the trend towards social media and aggregate data is drowning out some of the more academic and intellectual archives and utilities.

Search engines have been co-opted by social media to the point where they are almost useless for doing any real work.
>>
think about how much we rely on wikipedia. Do you remember how unreliable it used to be? Even with a full staff of thousands of educated volunteers, its accuracy is still of dubious quality.

Garbage in, garbage out. You're data is only as good as your source.

Do you know if you have any great-grandparents that lived in Argentina after 1945?

I have no issue with getting rid of old book or disposing of books that are damaged/unreadable, but not with just flat out trying to remove the entirety of a certain work. There's no purpose because time will handle it. If a book is shit, it will eventually go out of publication. For example, except for some digital archives, I imagine we won't be able to read Snooki's autobiography in 2416, but stuff like Infinite Jest would probably still be available in some form.
The real struggle is not allowing the good stuff to go out of publication.

We should maintain old works because of their outdated notions in order to show the linear dialectic, lest we fall into ideological traps. To do away with works we don't agree with would be pure revisionism.

Hume was a giant of intellectual thought. Just within the area of law he shaped causation so legal argument could progress into the system the common law has now. He also thought that a husband could compel his wife for sex regardless of consent. Does that mean we should do away with Hume's views on marital rape and only keep the compatible stuff? No, we should keep all to understand the historical context.

The remains of the Library of Alexandria were destroyed because thoughts in certain works were conflicting and look how far that set us back.

There is a single author worthy of having all trace removed from the earth. Ayn Rand.

lol you don't know what you are talking about. It is easy to filter your search results to only find what you are looking for.

>social media and aggregate data is drowning out some of the more academic and intellectual archives and utilities

wtf are you even talking about? It's not like they're going to start using the Wikipedia servers for facebook because facebook needs more machines.
