Does /lit/ have any comic series or graphic novels that they approve of?

Please don't make me go to /co/, and be suffered to shift through a bunch of capeshit
>>
Watchmen (it's psychological and metaphysical capeshit so it's good)
Maus
Persepolis
Akira
Uzumaki (Junji Ito is a safe bet in general)
Tintin (also Asterix if you want more euro-comic fun)
Calvin & Hobbes
From Hell
Lone Wolf & Cub
Ghost World
Anything by Robert Crumb, as long as you're open to lewd and offensive satire (like real offensive, not just haha le anti-PC kid)

There's probably more I'm forgetting, there's a lot of great graphic novels worth your time, but it's late here and my mind is blank. Hope these ones will do for now.

you're going to get lists of ok fiction (on the same level as fight club or american psycho) because you're asking lit and comic books are more about the art.

Here are some actually great comics:

Lose by Michael Deforge
Lint by Chris Ware
Eightball by Daniel Clowes
Arséne Schrauwen by Olivier Schrauwen
1-800-MICE by Matthew Thurber (heavy Pynchon influences on the story in this one)
Inner City Romance by Guy Colwell
Recidivist by Zak Sally
Big Questions by Anders Nilsen
Asterios Polyp by David Mazzuchelli

a lot more but these spring to mind

No, anon, but nice try. I'm a huge fan of Robert Crumb's work, actually. I just know that people unaware of his work are probably going to get a shock if they don't know what they're getting themselves into.

there are various graphic novels which are great but not sure if lit is going to approve them,
here is a list of great manga since american comics are usually pretty shit.
>aku no hana
>homunculus
>20th century boy
>monster
>sanctuary
>tsumi no batsu; a falsified romance
>onani master kurosawa(synopsis is an joke but it progressively gets darker and better)
>blame(best example of how graphic novels should be done)
>dragon head(great psychological horror)
>berserk(dark fantasy at its best)
>>

usually manga is a lot faster to read then your typical american comic ;giving you a example it takes me 1 hour to read 75 pages of american comic, while i can read 400 pages in 1 hour.so don't be intimated by the number of issues a manga has.
short ones that i can recommend are:
>dragon head
>uzumaki
>gyo
>akira
>Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan(pretty sad manga)
>aku no hana
>>
>>7700571
works from inio asano are pretty bad, there is barely a plot in most of his manga

>>
>>7700675
As a general rule of thumb, to see if a comic or graphic novel is any good, check to see if it was written by an Brit. That's Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison, Alan Moore. If it's illustrated by Dave McKean, that's good too.

Unless it's written by someone French, Spanish or South American in which case it's probably brilliant but you're not going to be able to appreciate it because you're a pleb who reads comics.

Read Uncle Sam by Darnall and Ruins by Ellis.
>>
>>7700610
Taking the scene out of context.

But also a poor scene to make your point, because you can clearly see Ozymandias (the guy kicking the shit out of the other guy) is forcing that dude to face god.

One of us here doesn't know how to read comics, and it's not me

The ink is, I agree, ugly indeed (although Gibbons consciously chose that style), but the compositions, the details and colour are spectacular. The pages you posted are also a great example of Moore's and Gibbon's care and beautiful autism - that whole chapter is structured symmetrically and you posted its middle. Compare the left and right pages and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Give it a shot anon. It's a comic, it can't take you more than two days to read.
>>

I have read it and found it tacky. I posted the page because that's what it looks like.

I thought 100 Bullets, Y the Last Man, and the first couple arcs of Fables were pretty solid.

Frankly it depends on what you're looking for, there are a lot of different varieties of comics (Tintin isn't anything like We3, etc.)

I don't know any fiction writer who has managed to do what Morrison did in Invisibles or Moore did in From Hell.

True sometimes the themes are tacky and preachy, but what I mean is this sheer exploration of space and time that comic books allow a writer simply cannot be repeated in only written form.
>>
Frank, Jim Woodring
Fun home, Alison Bechdel
Binky Brown meets the holy virgin mary, justin green
H G Oesterheld works (Mort cinder and El eternauta among others)
Many others mentioned in other posts
>>
>>7700550
It's pretty good, as a comic. However it has plenty of fans that dismiss the more important parts of the comic, looking at ponts that are weaker, but irrelevant.
it's like shakespeare, in that it has many levels of talking to its audiences, from a blood and guts pont of view, to a formal technique one.
>>
>>7700954
Thanks for the suggestion. The original shorter version that I found online is amazing.

Please give me an example because it's literally impossible.

You cannot have an image be synchronous with text in a book. Books are a linear exploration of time by necessity. You cannot have two things happening at the same time.

Comic books show an exploration of space and time in a synchronous moment.

I mentioned the two works because they show this pretty well. The background is it's own narrative in both works.

example no.1 again literally impossible to be repeated in text only form. Since it's a page that combines textual narrative and exploration of text as as space.
