Morning Star. Gonna miss my vulgar space Romans.
>>What are some of your favourite SFF Novels from around the world(non American)?
How can you tell anymore? I don't seek out that information. I read one by a Canadian author about everyone on Earth seeing their future, it sucked. Three Body Problem was pretty cool I guess. And the Inklings, they were great.
>>Who is your new favourite Obscure Authors and from which country do they hail?
Karl Gallagher, extremely technical Traveller-style science fiction. American. My diary tee-bee-eitch. American.
>>Give recs of SFF books you found while visiting other countries
I only traveled in the Hispanosphere, so it probably would have just been magic realism even if I'd looked.

>Favorite international SFF
I like Roadside Picnic, which is Russian. I also enjoyed the Witcher series as well, good fantasy, at least the first two collections of short stories. The series kind of goes downhill when it becomes a continuous series.

Does Quantum Thief count? Did he write it in Finnish as well?
>>
Question: Which genre is better?
>>
>>7673995
It's a stylistic copy (most superficial - rational magic system, loads of plot twists and world building with fairly simple prose) but all the content looks like his own work. While Lightbringer might not be a traditional 'copy' of Sanderson, it very much feels and reads like he tried to put himself in a Sanderson mindset and tried to emulate him.

Night Angel and Lightbringer are like night and day quite literally. One is much more gritty and somewhat predictable, the other seems to have as many plot twists as possible and magic is written as a neat, ordered and non overpowered manner as opposed to Ka'kari. NA also seems to be much more traditional in terms of the fantasy, whereas Lightbringer appears to take on a much more modernistic approach.

Seventh Tower didn't really remind me at all of Lightbringer, I think it's much closer to Shades of Grey (Fforde) even if Shades is scifi because of the direct physical properties/attributes of colour and how they influence the way people behave as well as their mood. Not to mention the heavy mythos focus and the focus on colour genetic INHERITANCE rather than a purely earned rank. If you've read Fforde's work they also draw upon the idea of what the person can see as a marker of their place in society and both books unexpectedly touch upon euthanasia and the morality of societally sanctified slaughter in a 'utopia'.

I feel that Seventh Tower is also very Nix-ish in that you can see the same mind behind it as the person behind that Sabriel series of books and the Keys to the Kingdom - very structured, each book with exactly the proportioned amount of twists (which aren't too unpredictable), each book leading to the next, a collection with roughly the same amount of quality each concluding in a somewhat predictable finale. The books are also very child orientated as they tend to stay far away from the issues that Fforde and Weeks explore.

Is "low sci-fi" a thing?
>>
>>7681619
I suppose "low" sci-fi would be just fiction set in the future/space, rather than speculative scientific fiction. Being "low" scifi doesn't make something bad, it just usually means it's less about science and more about people. "for the masses," if you will, rather than for the scientifically literate

like if 'Back to the Future' followed Doc around instead of Marty McFly.
>>
>>7681663

Well I wasn't sure what to call it. Like low fantasy is normal world but then fantasy stuff happens or fantasy coexists with the normal mundane world.

The back to the future analogy is pretty apt I think as it's a mundane world but Doc Brown's time machine is a science fiction phenomenon.

Loads of British and some Canadian ones, obviously. Outside of Western countries I have not read much SFF, though.

I want to read certain scifi and fantasy novels and stories but I can't find epubs of them in my language, you think someone who has a C1 cambridge certification can read them in English without too much trouble?
I've read The Beast that shouted Love at the Heart of the world last week, which incidentally was the first thing I read on my Kobo, and I want to read The Fifth Head of Cerberus, which it even has a fucking edition in my country but I can't find a digital release, together with other things I couldn't find like The Great God Pan, The King of Elflands Daughter and Teatro Grottesco, another one who has an edition in my language but I couldn't find. You think I'm better off with borrowing the translated ones from a library? I hate missing details that put the story in another light.

Right now I'm reading the physical copy of the Book of the New Sun, the Dying Earth is next.

>What are you currently reading
Last pages of The Two Swords by Salvatore, probably switching to some old fashioned Science Fiction then, either The Demolished Man or The Haunted Stars.

Perry Rhodan is pretty nice

I'm too mainstream.

Sandersonfags were always here(me being one from the first general), it's just that he released 2 new books last month, and is planning to release another later this month.
Of course there is going to be heavy discussion with new material available.

It's like years ago, Dresden Files isn't talked about/threads are just ignored, until September -December, when a new book is released. Then you have 4 Dresden Files threads all on the front page.

Same shit with Sanderson. In a month and a half or so, it will die back down(because no one is autistic enough to be discussing the same shit over and over). Only cosmerefag will be lubing up Sanderson's dick to impale himself upon.

What difference does that make? Is a German translation supposed to be worse than a French one?
I'm Italian by the way.
>>
>>7682083
Some German translations are terrible, mind you.
I remember the first Warhammer 40k books, the blurb on the back told you that the Emperor has been sitting immovable in his golden wheelchair for ten thousand years.
Yes, that is just a glaring example, but I remember others, like that one Warcraft book where the translator confused gnomes and goblins and the general problem is that they like to change things, names, place-names etc for no apparent reason.
>>
>>7682124
That's because they were fucking warhammer 40k and warcraft books, I bet you don't find shit like that in German Gene Wolfe books. At least I hope so.
>>
>>7681677
So cyberpunk? Maybe things like Cryptonomicon or the Baroque Cycle where science drives the story but it's science that we have? Or maybe you're thinking of thrillers.
>>
>>7682145
wouldn't know, haven't read them in German. some of them haven't even been translated though, like Book of the Short Sun. Generally German Science Fiction and Fantasy translations aren't good because the AAA-translators work on the New York Times bestsellers instead.
>>
>>7682310

I don't _want_ them translated, I merely pointed it out, shame you couldn't make out the difference.
As a matter of fact though, Germans are very spoilt when it comes to translations.
Everything gets translated here. Everything. Movies, series, mangas, books. Movies and series get dubbed 100%, there's no subbed content usually, you hardly find English books anywhere except, again. for the absolute big AAA stuff and even that only when it's new. I have to resort to amazon and its marketplace all the time to get my fix.

The best way to improve your english vocabulary is by reading. I'd suggest reading the book you want to read with a dictionary (online or physical, doesn't matter) to check words you don't understand.
It sounds cliché but it works, I did it a lot back when my english was terrible and few books had a portuguese translation
>>
>>7682532
this. only google. many complex words are nuanced. such that a simple deffinition or translation does not suffice. fuck I hate reading shit that requires putting down the book for three hours to work out what a word means.

verstehen for example has no translation but google translate will say it means empathy. so even translations of weber will be completely meaningless to you as it will translate verstehen and einfuhlung as being synonyms when they mean completely different things.

or reading more complex works, I can read 3 pages and I forget it all but my brain translates it as meaning

This would thematically clash with low fantasy, as they'd be the exact opposites of each other despite one getting its name from the other.

For instance, you'd be saying something like Dune is low sci-fi while the dying earth setting is low fantasy.

In the 1990s, popular sci-fi was filled with books that existed to push the author's (generally fringe, usually libertarian or socialist) political beliefs. This is one of them. As long as you're a teenage boy, you'll probably find it to be very enjoyable.

Sci-Fi has been a progressive genre since the 40s. Even the more right-wing writers like Heinlein and Herbert had left ideas like free love and recreational drug use.

He replied to a post that replied to a post that said:"In the 1990s, popular sci-fi was filled with books that existed to push the author's political beliefs"

"in the 1990s" can imply that he tries to say that before the 90s this was not the case.
It's not explicitly said, but there's been a hint of the opposite.
If the poster meant to say that it's always been the case then he wouldn't have had to add a decade.

So if your book doesn't have Mormons as main characters, it's because you think they don't exist, right? No, having all your characters be black or gay or transgender, or some combination, and then be constantly talking about their blackness or their gayness or their pronouns, and other characters saying "oh isn't it so great we've progressed past racism" or even worse a SPACE RACISM plot, that is bad.
>>
>>7684273
They found out they were living in fiction by using ancient Chinese magic. What, were you wanting a serious treatment of history after an Axis victory? Read Fatherland. Anything with the premise "...and Japan and Germany invade and conquer the US" is going to be retarded, unless there's magic or something.
>>
>>7684579
Yeah man, sci-fi should just be about spaceships, laser guns and killing aliens! Exploration of progressive philosophical concepts is for dumb SJWs #rabidpuppies. :^)
>>
>>7684591
Yeah, you're right, you've totally converted me. I now accept that SF should be about early 21st-century social issues, and should include quotas of marginalized minorities as main characters.
>>
>>7684613
Theres nobody setting a quota, but a lot of authors like writing about the issues of race and sexuality and how it would work in futuristic or alien societies. This has been a part of sci-fi for years. If you think this is a recent trend then you don't know anything about the genre.
>>
>>7684631
And when they do that they make it relevant or don't mention it. Plenty of books don't describe their characters at all. If you see them as white and see that as a problem, that's all you.

The issue isn't about having black gay transgenders. I don't mind black gay transgenders. I read Left Hand of Darkness, didn't mind it. That one OSC story where the human ambassador is this giant black guy with his dong flapping around, that was relevant to the plot. I didn't say it was recent, I didn't say it was bad, what I was criticizing was for irrelevant characteristics of any kind taking up prose space. You'd mind if a character woke up, said "boy, I'm glad I'm white," and then went to church, none of which is mentioned again, right? That sort of thing.
>>
>>7684591
What are you talking about? SJWs hate exploring progressive philosophical concepts.

Golden Compass was great. Too bad Pullman didn't have the stones to end the series how he should have. I wanted a powerful atheist shaking-fists-at-the-heavens epic, not a freaking anticlimax. "Oh but life has anticlimaxes-" That's why I care about novels but not your life.

>>
>>7689082
then why am i free to leave the zoo while you are stuck here forever?
>>
>>7689074
Now you're just bullshitting me. The Silmarillion is like the Bible of Fantasy.
>In contrast to The Lord of the Rings, to which mythopoeia is central, Eddison makes few references either to actual mythology or to an invented mythology after the fashion of the Silmarillion. One example of this is Eddison's ad hoc names for people and places versus Tolkien's invention of entire languages.

>Also, while The Lord of the Rings is written mostly in modern English, Eddison wrote The Worm Ouroboros largely in sixteenth-century English, making use of his experience translating Norse sagas and reading medieval and Renaissance poetry; a nearly unique approach among popular fantasy novels.[4] Eddison incorporates a number of actual early modern poems into the story, including Shakespeare's 18th sonnet, all meticulously credited in an appendix.
So not only my expectations are vastly reduced now but I'd also have to read this shit in English because it's not published in my country and it has fucking XVI century English. Fuck.
>>
>>7689086
I don't see you leaving.
>>7689088
They're different books. They're not meant to be the same, thank God. Where the Silmarillion is fairly literally meant to be the Bible of Fantasy, the Worm Ouroboros is meant to be the fantastic Kalevala. It's about the story, not the world. If that's not your thing, it's not your thing.

On the one hand, I am wary of translations for this kind of work. On the other, if you aren't a native English speaker (especially actual English English) you might find it pretty hard. I'd say give it a try online first, and if you can't handle it move on to the translation.

>I'm not even gonna try to read XVI century English, I'm pretty certain most English motherlanguage can't without notes.
It's honestly not that bad. To be clear, it's all written in modern spelling; it's just the sentence structure and archaic words that are Jacobean. If you can read or listen to Shakespeare (which secondary schoolers do) you can definitely read this. You should give it a try for five minutes at least.

And by far most Mandarin speakers are poor/uneducated as fuck.
Nobody cares about some farmers living in rural China or some sweatshop workers.

Spanish countries also tend to be poor and therefore less important.
But if you want to watch telenovelas it's nice to know Spanish, and you don't need a lot of Spanish knowledge to understand those series.
