>Two young men inherit a curse from their dying father. They relive the last 24 hours in his body up until his death, then wake up 24 hours before he is fated to die; all this goes in a loop that can be broken in a way only the father known. Each considers the nature of death, and arrive at opposite answers: should it be averted, or accepted?
>Main scenes have been finalized, so I'm currently writing the story proper.
>It's a story that can touch on any other possible theme, so I'm satisfied with its immunity to writer's block.
>Josse and Zivilyn Passant (both share equal billing as protagonists of the first volume; later volumes let them sink nicely into supporting or antagonist roles so that a completely new character can be the protagonist instead)

Since death is one of the premise's main themes, it's convenient for all kinds of side stories.

Below is a dialogue from the father to Josse and Zivilyn:

Humanity was once united in nomadry, led by someone whose wisdom knew no bounds.

The Leader knew the clean water, the safe food, the coming weather, the terrain ahead, predators' approaches, and criminals' motives. Only the passage of time brought death: not an animal, not an accident, and definitely not an assailant.

On their deathbed, the Leader secretly called for the very first person they saved, and spoke these words:

[None shall die alone or unknown. This is a divine oath that blesses a new person when its speaker can avoid death no longer.]

The Leader revealed everything to that person: how others would have died from the dirty water, the unsafe food, the sudden weather, the perilous terrain, the predators' ambushes, and the criminals' deceit. How animals, accidents, and assailants tried to bring death. How the Leader committed all those initial misfortunes to memory so that he could avert as many of them as possible.

The Leader used the repeating days to blaze a path only he could make, one that saved humanity time and time again. It may have been the result of countless failures, but while the Leader alone can bear the weight, he would make sure everything would be fine. Having said their piece, the Leader died with a beaming smile.

That very oath is now known as the Confidant's Creed, and I spoke it to the both of you for a reason: my time is up, and yours are starting. Coincidence no longer exists for people like us.

My main inspirations:
-the film Groundhog Day
-the game Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
-the manga Land of the Blindfolded

Ehh, it definitely needs work. I'm trying to mix up literary styles, so it's quite positive and light early on, and then very Kafkaesque as he deals with the absurdity of the scenario and tries to detach himself from it, and then towards the end I am going to go for something much more brutal and minimalist, to reflect his grim acceptance, or apathy rather. Though, I think this could turn out a bit messy and I might go for something simple yet aesthetic, like the great gatsby but worse.

Oliver Spears used to be a scientist, but he’s now guilty by association in connection with a cult of post-humans, who refer to themselves as “Seraphs.” The group is led by his former partner, who slaughtered an entire research base to maintain the groups anonymity. He finds himself in an immovable situation; He’s now a post-human, like the others, but wasn’t involved in the massacre. He is forced to either stay with his kind as a galactic criminal, or surrender himself to the authorities. Meanwhile, the hunt for the Seraphs is led by the charismatic and charming Farris Rogers, a mercenary hired by the Galactic Space Agency to use his vast resources to capture and eliminate the Seraphs. Through propoganda and action, he compells millions to falling in love with him as a leader. However, this causes civilian discontent towards the GSA, and a political conflict arises between the two forces who are supposed to be working together to destroy a common threat. The GSA and Rogers soon become enemies, with the people backing their idol. However, once the camera’s and the eyes are off of him, Rogers will have to decide for himself where his true loyalties lie as well; with the people who love him, or his lust for power.

How many of you are writing a practice novel or will you try to get it published or self published?
>>
>Genre
Sci-fi. Medium, in between sift and hard. Frame narrative
>Plot
Short stories taking place on this main, large airport/weigh station/rest stop in my novel's method of space travel. Emphasis on "humanity" not restricted to species.
>How many words
Actual prose, somewhere around 30,000. Details and ideas included (been mulling this over for years on and off, but never actually writing), countless.
>Are you satisfied?
Trick question? Who is?
>Name of main protagonist
Hal.
>>
>>7590908

Writing a "practice novel" will set you up to fail. It implies that attitude of "if it goes wrong, no problem", which will make you lazy and a worse writer. You need to approach every novel like it's going to win the next Nobel Prize, or sell a million copies in the opening weekend, or whatever aspirations you may have. Just like everything in life.
>>
>>7590958
Why can't you write just to write?

Practice makes perfect. If you only plan to do Pulitizer material, you'll never write anything. Most writers have 10x of unpublished material vs published. Those unpublished materials helped perfect the material that wins the publication or prize.
>>
>>7590973

The difference is they wrote that unpublished material to be published, but it wasn't good enough for them, rather than just writing it as a hobby. Always aim to be the best, regardless of if you make it or not.
>>
>Genre
Not sure really, elements of science-fiction and psychological thriller maybe, but mostly it's just a plain old fiction.

>Plot
A man gets cucked by his wife, and when he confronts her she pushes for divorce and custody of their daughter. He grows increasingly depressed and desperate, and is considering ending it all when a mysterious figure offers him the chance to try out some new technology. When he uses this technology, he is able to create any virtual reality he wants. It's like lucid dreaming, only he remains fully conscious. At first he uses the virtual reality for fairly ordinary pleasures, but as time progresses his acts become more and more depraved and he begins to lose touch of what is real and his whole concept of reality and existence becomes increasingly distorted.

>How many words written so far
About 1000, but scattered about in various disjointed passages.

>are you satisfied with it
No, I think my plot is potentially brilliant, but I'm still struggling to work out some of the finer details, and quite a lot of the time my writing simply isn't good enough. I've been sitting on this idea for about 5 years, and all I have to show for it is a few pages that I'm actually happy with.

Science and math with sci-fi elements are the driving thing. And what starts off as a satire of Jingoism and 'patriot's' thoughts turns into a dark and depressing Yandere story of possession and lust.

Yes it sounds like it's all over the goddamn place. That's because it kinda is.
The second book, though, is 95% done... it's the best in my opinion. The main struggle is to get Part 1 polished enough to be it's intro, to actually have people make it through and want more.

Sorry for wall of text. 300,000 words and going... haha...

I misspoke. Depending on how much fun I have with the first volume, I could easily make it 100k+; the contest only wants stories with 17k max, so I could trim that multi-course feast into a simple meal.

>what genre
no idea, sci-fi?
>plot
It started as something very different, but has become more of the wandering immortal badass just passing through life and an interesting universe. As such there are many significant sub stories but not much of a main one. More episodic, which is why it has become so big in my head, as new things just keep getting added.

more or less, I got a big detailed outline done and the middle and ending feel great in my head. It is the beginning that just doesn't seem right. Originally it didn't really have a beginning but his origins keep popping up to define his motivation and I didn't want to just tell people he does X without have some reasoning.
>name of your main protagonist
has many names over the centuries, but I plan to keep them all one syllable long to my him distinct from the other characters. Zak is the first one.
>etc...
So I got the main character (enviable new high end hotel manager in low tech civilization) getting married at sea. Got high tech miners from space with lots of big robots. Need him to get into space before planet is destroyed by big bad (which is not covered till later). I figure I would make him emotional troubled so he makes mistakes, but not broken to the point he rushes in like an idiot as he is really smart (arguably a Marty Stu in many ways).
Any advice or suggestions?

>what genre

Low-fantasy. All races are anthropomorphic animals a la redwall but there's no magic. Aiming for it to be a novel for youths.

>plot

Two best friends get separated after getting caught up in a plot to overthrow a lord. One lands in the midst of a tribe of savage wolves, who take them away and try to teach them to forget their old life among civilization and to embrace the freedom of acting like a wild animal. The other is framed for the overthrow plot and must choose to either prove themself innocent, or to take the blame and instead search for their missing friend.

The one among the wolves, being the much more frail and innocent one of the two, must try to find the courage to withstand the very frank and shocking realities of nature that the Wolves show her. While the other one must eventually resort to the criminal underworld for information on their friend, only giving credence to those that accuse him of being a murderer, thus making his search harder and harder as his bounty climbs and more people go after him.

>genre
Sci-Fi

>plot
Well, it's not set in stone yet, there's gonna be a space war, mechs, lots of destruction and action. I have the mental and emotional intelligence of a 12 year old, so I'm going full over the top bombastic and hoping someone finds it entertaining. So hyperbolic that it borders on absurd? I haven't written much so this is something I'm still playing with.

I also want to introduce a bit more unexplained. I like that in stories, where things are fairly standard then weird shit starts happening.

Anyway, at the end I'm hoping to have the evil AI take control of an entire planet and turn it into a destructo mech and the protags have to land their mechs on it or inside and do crazy anime shit to blow it up.

I just want to be retarded in front of everyone.

novella is what i'm shooting for

I guess it's sci-fi? hard to say, I don't think about it so much. alternate world.

A homeless man in a weird desolate beach town/slum decides he wants to have a lineage & becomes involved with several women. A powerful man in the town tries to prevent him fathering anyone because he thinks (maybe rightly) that it will turn into a criminal dynasty. A feud slowly develops.
The powerful man's niece is part of a developing local religion and in a BDSM relationship with a boy who she found in the town. He feels emasculated & runs off to the hobo as a underling gangster before eventually processing that he's not emotionally prepared for making his own decisions, and the girl forces him to come back.

Fanfiction adventure

A human girl with a demon sword from the current times travels to 15the century Japan where demons are still existent.
Hard to believe, but it is already 100 000 words plus.

It is published on fanfiction, relatively popular.

First chapter is crap. Honestly. I started it for a sole purpose of ameliorating my vocabulary. Now I am quite proud of myself and it brings me a fair dosage of satisfaction.

I deliberately utilise uncommon expressions and practise descriptive writing to enrich my pool of words. I am pleased when one needs to look up a meaning of a word used in my story.

A young woman who can ASMR people into incapacity finally finds a person who isn't lulled into submissive inertia by her voice. This other person instead has a voice that can drive people to suicide. Pig is a an obese, unhygienic, apathetic man thaat is anither generic, average office worker. During daytime, he is nothing but a random face among the masses, but during nighttime he gives in to his socially unacceptable, twisted desires that he hides on his everyday life.

One day, he receives an e-mail about a guy proposing an idea to him, the concept of filming a snuff film. Naturally, Pig is fascinated by the aforementioned proposal, and excitedly agrees to secretly work on this film under the redudndant pseudonym of "pig", while wearing a rubber mask of the animal itself.

He then meets the cast... And essentially, shit happens.

>words

I honestly don't know; I write everything on a journal.

>are you satisfied with it?

Nope. I think that this would work much better as a film, rather than a book. Mostly because after the introduction the story has an approach in which there really isn't a protagonist. To put it into perspective, I visualize this as an Iñarritu film in which there are multiple protagonists that have separate stories that come together.

I also visualized all the necessary scenes for the production of the snuff film to be filled with music instead of dialogue if this was a movie instead of a book.

>Main protagonist

At the beginning, Pig; however, the story ends up having around three protagonist because the focus of the plot is constantly shifting around them (I know that cohesion might be a problem).

I'm constantly re-writing the story, too. I really only do this for the pleasure that I get from writing it.

- Aiming to escape his responsibilities, the prince of a colonial empire joins an expedition to ancient ruins; what they end up discovering is a giant robot, the last remnant of a super-civilization which once covered the Earth and beyond. This reignites a war with an alien species of microfungi which aim to destroy consciousness through the universe, and were the demise of the aforementioned super-civ, making the prince responsible for something much worse than what he wanted to escape, changing the whole world.

Have you ever tried not watching shitty shounen animu? Try watching Legend of the Galatic Heroes since it's space opera and long as fuck, or also Serial Experiments Lain since you like GiTS.

>what genre
Heck if I know. It's definitely got more of a literary bent than most genre books, but I supposed it's technically 'Adventure', if I were to call it something.
>plot
Too long to even think about explaining. Boils down to: "Goofball takes over the world," but obviously it's a lot more complicated than that.
>how many words written so far
110k so far in 2nd draft. 156k in 1st draft. 2nd will probs be around 210-220k.
>are you satisfied with it
Yeah. It's not bound to be a masterwork, but it's not meant to be; just something marketable so I can make some nickels.
>name of your main protagonist
He's really annoying and everyone just calls him 'the Boss' because he's a bossy-butthead.

I tend to use 'et cetera' or 'and c' more than 'etc.' Sometimes I use 'et cet', though.

And it better not be yet another story with wolves where wolves are le savage killer bad guys.

>How many words written so far
None really, kinda piddled with and wrote an introduction to a dragon-rider type thing. Like i said before I don't want to resemble the Inheritance Cycle too much ( Although I love those books)
>are you satisfied with it
Yes and no.. I don't want to spend the time writing the book and then EVERYONE i show it to say it reminds them of Eragon.. I want it to be its own thing.
>name of protagonist
I've piddled around but i think I'm set on Ven or Ventis. Probably Ven, short, sweet, and to the point I suppose.

General Idea of plot..
>Be no such things as dragons just myths and drunken tales of men in taverns
>all of said Dragons officially show themselves
>Come to fuck shit up
>Intelligent? Maybe not intelligent like dragons in eragon where they can speak and use magic and what not, but enough to know what they're doing
>HUGE FUCKING WAR between ALL RACES (Orcs, Elves, Man, Dwarf) and dragons
>Ven comes across baby dragon with busted up wing
>Heals him and becomes friends
>Try to convince races that we can change all this, possibly
>Declared traitor by his race
>Dragons don't like this either, make _______ enemy as well
>War on two fronts

By the way, would someone have an idea as to what I could title this?

I don't want to call it "Seven Samurai", even though that'd be a good title.

I can't think of anything that would relate to the theme of the book with the deadly sins and virtues.

>what genre
Sci-fi, pretty hard but still set in the future so it gets speculative. Nothing thought to be fully impossible is allowed. Softest thing is a failed Alcubierre drive described in the prologue, which destroyed itself and ended up sparking a huge world war.
>plot
First contact, humans more advanced but no FTL so it's a bit of a sketchy situation. Local people have a very schizophrenic technology level by our standards and have a variety of reasons for wanting human technology and bodies. Humans were sent to the world to start a colony and/or terraform it without prior knowledge that there would be sentient life there.
>how many words written so far
Rather not say, not enough. I have a few years worth of outlines and worldbuilding though.
>are you satisfied with it
I'm satisfied with how I envision the plot, but I'll wait until I re-read it before deciding if I like it
>name of your main protagonist
There are 5. Jack, Vic, Ren, Ray, and Greg (Jack, Victor, Ren [蓮], Raymond, and Grigori). The book shifts between their perspectives as they try to figure out a way to both not end up dead and avoid causing a global conflict on their new world.

>plot
In near future Hong Kong, a private investigator is called to investigate the murder of a corporation's research scientist. The discovery of a strong artificial intelligence there plunges the city's underworld into chaos, the tense political situation in the city's background finally breaking down into conflict over control of the AI. Ranging from the government, corporations, revolutionary groups, terror groups, Triads, and religious groups, many groups want control of the AI to secure their own power over the city. In the midst of this conflict, the private investigator and the AI must decide where they stand in this war between ideologies.
>how many words written so far
About 7000
>are you satisfied with it
Not really, the start is pretty slow and there are some contradictions in that scene to clean up later. I'm confident that I'll be able to write the more political and philosophical parts well, but keeping the reader's interest during some of the much needed exposition (due to it being such a politically driven conflict) will be difficult.

Plot sounds legit, but it's convoluted, divide the plot into a trilogy by using the different groups on different settings and how it affects the main storyline and you have a good hit on your hands.

>divide the plot into a trilogy by using the different groups on different settings and how it affects the main storyline and you have a good hit on your hands.
Idea: he could separate the book into three from different perspectives and factions, but around the same event and time frame; this way, you can have a multi-threaded plot that isn't particularly complex or long, while fleshing the setting/characters more, and for marketting purposes you would have the readers by the balls, since you wouldn't be telling them the whole story in a single book.

Surrealist fiction set in a world in which all animals excluding humans have inexplicably vanished. Animals have become deities.

It's a first person narrative in which the main character, a boy, encounters a goat, longs for the return of his deceased twin, and is sexually attracted to his aunt.
