Analytic dominates in the Anglophone world. It inclines toward empiricism, formalism, and simplicity. It has little interest in metaphysics or style. Perhaps it can typified by this anecdote about Samuel Johnson from Boswell's Life of Doctor Johnson:

Continental philosophy dominates non-Anglo European philosophy and is much more interested in perception, the senses, and complexity. It is preoccupied with representation and style. Perhaps it can typified by Jacques Derrida's statement in Of Grammatology: "il n'y a pas de hors-texte" ("there is no outside-text" or "there is no outside of textuality").
