Why doesn't Dante's Inferno have a movie?

Wrong board fuckface.

OP the answer is that the imagery throughout the story requires a hugeass budget to film the special effects in a way that doesn't look corny and stupid, and the ideas in Inferno are controversial (in a bad way) enough from the perspective of milquetoast America that it can't really be turned into a mindless action blockbuster either.

Because any accurate portrayal would have little to no mainstream appeal. They would have exaggerate the "muh wrath of God/evil of men" shenanigans to have any hope of turning a profit, which in the movie industry is the primary goal.

Because it would be boring. A movie version could be visually stunning if done well, but "guy goes sightseeing in Hell and talks to a bunch of obscure Italians about papal corruption and the sorry state of 13th century Florence" is not exactly a riveting story.

then why has the book pervaded for so long

For its language, for its imagery, for being the most detailed and fully realized vision of Christian Hell.

Because there is a small number of people that, throughout the ages, has been interested in that sort of thing. But the number of people interested in that sort of thing has, as a result of the decline of the papacy's and, moreover, religion's importance to the average individual, decreased.

there is no reason that couldn't be translated to film
Guillermo del Toro should direct it

Terza rima obviously doesn't translate to the screen, which means the only good things you're left are the setting and the imagery. The dialogue, which takes up much of the book, would have to be almost completely cut out (partly because much of it is meaningless unless you are aware of the historical context, which you aren't unless you have access to endnotes or are a scholar specializing in medieval Italian history and culture, and partly because a lot of it is pretty uninteresting even when you do have the context). The story, insofar as it could be said that there is a story, is boring. God is letting Dante go sightseeing with his personal idol as guide, and that's about it. There's no goal, there's no conflict, there's no struggle, there's nothing at stake. The Dante's Inferno video game may be complete garbage, but it made radical changes for good reason.

Because Pasolini died young.

film can facilitate this easily

But there is one, and it's great.

Check out Dante's Inferno (2007). It was on Netflix some time ago. May still be on there.
