Why does it feel better to read a book when I purchase it new? I've bought used books before and stolen library books but I don't feel the same urge to read them like new books.
Does anyone else have this feel?
Consumer guilt
Buyer's remorse
Yup. I feel the same way. I've purchased used books, taken some from the library (and checked some out), and none of them compare to reading a new book I've purchased. It's probably a bit childish, but oh well. Might have to do with some engrained capatilistic mentality. Or maybe it's something more simple. Just the knowledge that the book is really YOURS makes you want to read it more. But maybe that's the same thing (property, etc). Maybe it has something to do with value; "I spent good money on this, so I'm sure as fuck going to enjoy it."
It's a lot like having sex with women, actually. Banging some loose chick isn't nearly as satisfying as a taking someone's virginity. It's more "special". Hell, I mean we fetishize virgins. And I'm not saying certain people don't prefer women (or men) who sleep around. Of course that's a thing too.
I'm rambling. But that's what I've got.

My dear friend, when you reach your early twenties, as I have, you come to realize that life is short. We're allotted limited hours here on this pale blue dot we call Earth, so we best not waste them. That's why when it comes to reading, I read the best and only the best. And the best is David Foster Wallace. I strenuously urge everyone on this board who's reading this to pick up Infinite Jest when you get the chance. Just remember: Wallace said, "Fiction's about what it is to be a fucking human being." He didn't say, "Fiction's about what it is to be a fucking Witch-king of Angmar."
