Do you think it's possible to publish a book written in the way the movie "Slacker" was filmed?
A large cast of characters, superficially examined on the most part for short periods of time, focusing on brief conversations, monologues, expository "scenes" ultimately all tied together by a shared theme?
Thanks for reminding me of Slacker. Fucking great film.
Slacker is my favorite film and I just rewatched it last night.
Of course this is a valid way to write a book I'm guessing you have very little knowledge of literature as this is hardly uncommon.
Yeah I think that Infinite Jest is this way to an extent as is 2666. Even Gravity's Rainbow, while the majority of the book follows Slothrop there are a hell of a lot of other characters and they're pretty much all connected through paranoia. I want an entire novel devoted to Titcherine.
Thoughts on G.K. Chesterton? I might not agree with him much, but damn if he wasn't fucking brilliant.

What does /lit/ think of Felisberto Hernández?
Muebles el Canario is GOAT
>>7725713
I don't quite know what to make of him. Take a thing like Nadie encendía las lámparas. What the hell is it? Is it even a story? A dream? A prose poem? And yet there's something attractive about his writing.
>>7725713
He's enigmatic to the point of incomprehensibility. He leaves me legitimately dumbfounded. He's not as straight-forward and pessimistic as Onetti, but nowhere near as erudite or dry as Borges or Arreola (Arreola is, admittedly, pretty wry and fanciful, but his fantasies take on a very dark turn very early). I think he has a bit of Walser in him, but he's unique in his vision. I admire and cherish his works.

Not OP, but I've been interested in this for a while. Do I need to read anything else by Crowley to "get it" or is it just jumbled nonsense anyway?
So I've been thinking of picking up some Eco, maybe Name of the Rose or Focault's Pendulum, but I hear wildly mixed reviews.
On one hand are the readers who say the books are amazing, well-researched and well-written, and that you can learn a lot from reading them.
On the other hand are the readers who say his books are incredibly dense and difficult, that you need a degree in medieval history and linguistics to understand them.
What's /lit/'s take on Eco? Is there a better volume to begin with? Good translations to pick up?
>>7725329
Name Of The Rose is the most accesible
Focault's Pendulum has great parts, but it's long and meandering by design. I wouldn't call it difficult but I understand that someone couldn't find it interesting enough to finish it.
just read his essays, he's a good novelist but his essays are GOAT

Where do you live?
Take it up with your research librarians or advisers who are in charge of overseeing your dissertation?
>>7725260
have you tried interlibrary loan? Again I am also curious as to where you live.
So I'm entering a competition where I have to write something in 500 words. The restrictions are deliberately broad so the format of the piece could essentially be anything. I'd rather not write some pretentious mini-essay or meditation, but an actual story. However there's not much story you can tell in only 500 words.
Are there any good short stories written by good writers that are around 500 words? And I mean ones that actually have a narrative, characters etc.
>>7725257
You can write just about anything in 500 words. I'd leave out dialogue though, or focus on a single conversation.
That'd actually be pretty good–focus on a single conversation and flesh it out in 500 words. Probably not too unique, but it could be a gem if you put work into it.

I'm a history major at University and needed to read a book about the 20th century towards the end of the post-war era for an exam.
I had to pick two nations to go further in depth with and picked Japan and France.
The part about Japan was hella interesting and I'm now looking for historically accurate novels (or any other kind of literature really) about this topic, especially about the population's daily life. Any recommendations?
You'd be better off with Ozu films for daily life
The daily life stuff doesn't tend to get translated from what I can tell
This seems like it could be interesting so I'll try to breath some life back into this thread for now. Hopefully I'll be on tomorrow or later tonight with some suggestions family.
Pic related, especially if you like baby-killing.
So I've been spending some of my free time writing. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h0QkHfCO_99JXx246oQkiBlhRKCybn48BrCcJnRwBsw/edit?usp=sharing
Was wondering if anyone could give some suggestions of improvement. Plot, punctuation, structure, grammar, wording. You see things some things in [] those are things (like names) that are subject to change.
Feel free to leave a comment suggesting more character names (there will be quite a few needed) or suggesting where you'd like the story to go.

Just a couple of things:
Learn to use commas.
Italics are overused. When stating the name of a place, capital letters are fine. You don't need to emphasize it. The reader will figure out if that place is important. Less is more.
The stuttering is also overdone. If you must have someone stutter, a break at the start of the first word is fine. Not every sentence, and not more than once in a sentence. It's not realistic, and takes you out of the moment.
You don't need to detail...

It's just copy paste
It's a mix of pseudo-academic writing and ideological craziness. His "history of Cultural Marxism" is laughable, his sources are dubious at best and he mostly just copy-pastes entire articles and blog posts.
What's more interesting is reading about his proposed future utopia, where he goes into an insane amount of detail. Even going so far as to personally design the uniforms and emblems of every proposed civilian and military ranks.
His "Tips and Tricks" section on performing the most effective terrorist attacks is also highly entertaining...
