I am trying to write a fantasy story, I am a complete amateur and not a very good writer and my plot is all over the place. However, any opinion on it is needed, be as honest as you possibly can please. And yes, I'm a fucking idiot. (not even sure why I'm doing this, because I'm drunk probably, whatever, ready for a beasting anyway)

Your English is a little rusty, and you misuse a word here or there, but you've produced a more substantial body of work towards completing a novel than I myself ever have.
Your persistence makes me ashamed that I have thought about writing for so long, but have simply produced fragment after countless fragment.
The fact that you are not yet skilled but persist makes me both mildly frustrated and more hopeful for myself.
Writing is a craft, and so it must be learned.
There are many here...

I only read a bit, but it doesn't seem any worse than the fantasy shill that gets published. There are grammatical mistakes, but that's to be expected for something that hasn't been edited.
Can't say I see much skill or promise, but hey you're actually writing which is probably more than most people on this board can say. I would suggest reading varied, quality books. It may help with your bland writing style.
So /lit/, this is probably my favorite book. What say you?
Fucking yes man. I read this book on a whim one summer and loved it. I've been meaning to pick up a copy of my own (I previously borrowed it from the library) to write all over because I'm definitely due a reread.
The fragmented stories, dreamlike sequences of nostalgic tranquility and brutal, shocking deaths just seem to sum up war. Disorientating, shocking and horrific, just making the quiet moments seem all the more sweet.
Sure, it's a good book. But I'd say you probably haven't read THAT many books.

the one with the dude driving around the lake over and over was p good
I'm a true pleb...can /lit/ suggest and good book to help me change my situation?
Thanks!

Finnegans Wake
What does /lit think about Jonathan Lethem? I'm thinking of reading the Fortress of Solitude and wanted some thoughts.
I enjoyed Motherless Brooklyn
but that's the only thing of his I read
I have Dissident Gardens on the shelf but I have a 7 book backlog and he's probably 6th or 7th on the list of priorities

I think he's one of the most interesting authors of the last decade, one that cleverly breaks the mold of the new realism that is the dominant of literary fiction post-2000.
On the other hand, he's never going to get past the stigma of "muh genre fiction" that is still too present in contemporary academia (not to mention the retards who post here).
Chronic City is possibly the best 9/11 novel published until now.
not worth the energy to hate
What's the best book(s) for all things Caesar? I want to learn everything there is to learn about the man. What he accomplished, who he influenced, quotes from him, his politics, etc.
Is pic related worth anything? I'd prefer just one solid book that housed as much information on him as possible.
>>7833361
I'll bump this for you, poor soul.
Always start with the primary source. There are writings that exist authored by Caesar. Start with his campaigns in Gaul. After that, if you're you're still hungry, read his civil war.
The absolute BEST book I've used a couple of times for essays is pic related.
Your pic related is fine, but it's best to read more than one book to "...learn everything." Particularly, the primary sources. Always start with that!
>>7834493
Okay, cool. Thanks man.
>>7834493
I haven't read Gelzer's book, but that's interesting.
I began by reading The Gallic War at the library. You can always tell who has read this book and who hasn't too. Although the descriptions are quite staccato, Caesar almost always relays some emotional information (I recall one instance where he starts sobbing with the men remaining after the result of a bitter attack on the camp, which left almost everyone dead). Ultimately though I didn't get a lot out of this book.
I found...

>Chapter 2: Caelum
Your tired eyes are shut tight. You’re listening to the endless peace of a nearby ocean, wave by wave, as they send a gentle breeze your way. You think of the dream of last night…
“The Angel, and the-” your thoughts are cut off by someone who pushes your arm, softly.
“…Temper! Temper, wake up!” a girls voice exclaims- she continues to push.
“Huh, that’s not my name?” you think, and open up your dreamy eyes.
You’re led on your back, upon soft sands that are hot to touch. There’s an ocean...

yes. check the mann thread(s) we've had recently
>>7833508
I'm a really big faggot, that's why I'm asking. Is the gayness in this book just some fruity metaphor for some bullshit or is it sexy hot times?
How the fuck i am supposed to read this man?
Calmly. He's much funnier than his fans portray him to be.

I'm not very well experienced with horror novels, but I'm looking for a book that will genuinely get under my skin, maybe cause me to look over my shoulder. I've currently read Mr. B. Gone, Book of Blood, and House of Leaves.
Nothing against them, but please exclude Stephen King and Dean Koontz.
Also, general horror thread!

Don't know why but I could never get all the way through that.
OP you can try Edge of Running Water by William Sloane.
Haven't finished it yet, but always heard good things.
I think it's totally OOP but you can find an ebook somewhere.
What about shorter stories and novellas?
Are you into Lovecraft?
I never really "got" it until one night when I was home alone a little over decade ago now (so I was younger, with an imagination that hadn't yet been ground down...

The Exorcist and Legion by Blatty.
I don't care if you've seen the films. If read properly as mentioned here >>7834808
then they'll do.
So, recently my friend told me to read this older book since I sorta like reading dark things. /lit/ is this book worth my time? Can anyone give me a review of the book? Please be specific, thanks.
It has no real merit except to make the reader feel bad for the author and the abuse he suffered if they can overlook the writing itself.

So...not worth my time?

Do we have to do everything for you? If you could find it at a thrift store among the cookbooks and illiterate prayer books, then don't read it, you anus.
I do quite like her. Stumbled upon this by pure accident. Someone read it? Is it worth it? What's it about? Just pics or text, too?
[Someone able/willing to provide a link to the electronic version?]
other than playing that chick with aids in that 90s movie did she ever do anything else worth a shit? that said i moved to new york right at the end of the 90s little did i know it would turn from cool shit like that to trustfund shopping mall
American Psycho, Last Days of Disco: both good movies.
>>7832743
i know a muslim chick who looks exactly like her and talks exactly like her, i'm like wtf this is weird, maybe since she looks the same she like copied all her mannerism or something, or else the muslim chick is like the descendant of some mamluke warrior taken from whatever country sevigny was from and they are genetically close or something
What is /lit/'s opinion of Robert Jordan's work?
Try asking in scifantasy topic.
I read first three up to the point where he bought spear wielding nomads into the fray, then I lost interest. He talks and talks and talks and says nothing.

I actually met someone who had a tattoo of that thing. I joked that he was secretly a Lacanian and that was the Borromean Knot.
>>7833477
it's pretty much a borromean knot, but with an ouroboros on top.
Just finished this book.
It was good. Not spectacular.
I'm not sure why it's been rated so highly on goodreads (4.15/5).
It's a story that highlights abuse, racism and sexism and does so without reservations. But apart from that I don't see any great literary merit. It's just a good story that incorporates these elements.
People in emma watson's feminist book club on goodreads (our shared shelf) are raving about it but I don't understand.
What am I missing?
wardine be cry as told by a negress
>>7832554
I haven't read Infinite Jest which /lit/ considers a godly work. Is this book (the color purple) supposed to be that good? Really, what am I missing?
>>7832547
Also, I get that the language used is supposed to make a statement on the illiteracy and lack of education but the deliberately bad prose wasn't very appealing to read.
Disappointment. And I'm Russian, so can't blame it on the translator
>>7832513
Then blame it on the fact that you're Russian. You people are retards.
>>7832833
Op here.Well I was reading it and it didnt impressed me on a huge level nor it did disimpressed me...The deep diving into Nehljudov's psychological thoughts and his change of character through the book is very interesting(at least for me) but the end was a little dissatisfying on the other side...
