What are the essential stories of Poe?
I have already read a few:
The black cat
The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Cask of Amontillado
The Masque of the Red Death
The Purloined Letter
They were good, especially the mystery/decetive ones.
What about that bird one.
i listened to vincent price read ligeia and im not sure if it was actually good or if i just thought it was because of his voice

What are the best books/reads for someone currently suffering from clinical depression and looking to get back to feeling better?
I lost my job 4 months ago, was basically outsourced and it sent me down a severe spiral. I maybe leave the house once or twice a week. I'm currently reading a mediocre self-help book as well as Catch-22 but my psychologist told me I should read some more "light reading like John Grisham's The Firm" because some of the classics and self-help books might be a little too daunting at this point."

Depression isn't real you moron, but go ahead, keep scoffing down pills and reading self help books made solely to make money.
If you want to really get out of that funk, then actually contribute to your happiness by working on your hobbies or interests, taking with people helps too but don't bore them with the typical 'I'm soooooo sad :(', just shoot the shit with them.

I've been somewhat lost while reading this book, should I read the series or does it get worse?
If you get lost reading something like this, then you probably shouldn't be reading at all

the book is notorious for its fucked up structure though
>it's a Waterloo chapter
>It's a Pierre doing dumb shit chaper

That chapter was fantastic. I don't understand why people don't like it.
>>7969750
Exactly. When I remember my reading of Les Mis, I barely recall or care about the melodrama of the characters, but it's the detailed descriptions, of Waterloo, of the convent, of the Paris sewer system, these very worthwhile portraits with great information that would be not so easily disseminated among the public, which are what rise up as the most memorable and enduring parts of the book.
The intricacies of the weather, artillery, formations and other minutiae of Waterloo: 10/10Jean Valjean's...

Anyone here /chronicmentalillness/?
How do you guys force yourself to read?
I try open up a book, but all the words kind of blur together and have no meaning.
>>7969213
Usually I just lie in bed and listen to drone-y ambient or some slowcore. Can't do much else.

When I'm in a really bad spot and I can't even read or write I work on my notes. It helps me not to lose a sense of continued progress and puts my mind to work on creating new connections. In time this cheers me up just enough to get me back on my grind.
So /lit/, how can i get into Kant? I really want to dig in but i feel like a certain bagage is needed.
holy shit why is /lit/ like 50% people who just need to attend an introductory philosophy class
you think you're too smart to just do the primitive stuff, but if you just browsed your college's lecture catalog and visited half the lectures, you'd be twice as smart as you are now
just stop looking for ways to get something for nothing
>>7969040
how much you guys wanna bet this pathetic faggot hasn't even read Kant?
>>7969046
I really just want to get into Kant. It is like a trigger to /lit/

Check on The Sporting Club by McGuane if you get a chance.
This book is like the lovechild of Faulkner and Salvador Dali. So much fun, and nobody outside of Portugal has heard of him.

I'm looking forward to reading more McGuane. Got ninety two in the shade for a few bucks the other day. Always great finding a new author you like
What's your idea of heaven?
What's your idea of hell?
Where do you genuinely believe you're going?

All are saved in the sense that everybody ends up in the same place. Only their attitudes and conduct in life will determine how they react to this.
