Why do people hate her, /lit/?
>>8024174
Because she us a bad writer and a worse philosopher.

Yeah but what is it exactly about her philosophy that pisses people off, what is bad about it?

Were you wearing a star wars episode one tshirt with autismo sandals and cargo shorts? Do you have a chilibowl at 19 years old? Do you line random things up?
i mean i wasn't embarrassed by the very fact but by that he unwillingly exploited the poor harpooner likely without consummating the marriage
anybody here have experience in graduate level sociology?
i'm taking a class right now as an elective, it's crosslisted with 400 level. so, for the 600 level kiddies like me, there's a 6-10 page paper required about a "major work of contemporary sociology"
what texts might be an appropriate choice?
what form should the essay take? what kinds of theses should I consider?
sorry for this thread. is there a better place to ask a question like this?

>>8023890
I'm not familiar with the burger education system, let alone the texts you read, but Bourdieu is always a safe choice. The Logic of Practice is probably the most influential of his works, and the good thing about Bourdieu is that even people with excess chromosomes should be able to grasp him. Just google for some commentary on him, plagiarize it cleverly, and voilĂ , you're done.

Are there any high school english teachers on here? I've realized at 23 that I'll have to eventually take on a wagecuck existence and am considering this path. It seems like it could be a lot of fun, and you get summers and winter breaks for travel and writing. Thoughts?
Yeah sounds good OP
If you get to teach higher classes with students actually interested in literature it should be pretty cool
I know nothing though lmao
You can make an impact OP
I had a badass high school teacher that actually had a class exclusively on James Joyce
I probably wouldn't have been able to read Ulysses otherwise
>>8023659
I had a based HS English teacher who got me into Kafka, Joyce, Jung and Kant, and I know it sounds cliched but I think he literally changed my life.
OP, if you feel like you can actually teach well and aren't doing it for the 'easy job' meme, you could actually help reignite interest in literature.
To those of you who have gone through existential crisis, is it possible to get out? Are there any options besides religion? Or do you just suppress it by ignoring it and becoming less conscious of your existence? I don't think I'm special, by the way, nor do I think I'm cool for having this shit: it's just a pain in the ass. To keep this literature related: did reading help you in any way? I've already tried lifting, and I've already gotten laid, so if these didn't work, should I just kill myself?

You have to realize that it's okay for things to be arbitrary and aimless. You have to come to terms with the fact that you're an animal that needs to feel a certain sense of challenge and purpose to live well, and that it's up to you to seek those conditions out.
Religion can fix it too but that's essentially cheating by just grabbing onto something that claims to impose order on you without thinking about any consequences besides easing your pain.
Consider reading some of the old...

Even if there's no objective purpose/meaning for your life, that doesn't mean it has to be worthless. Live for yourself. You decide your own purpose. When you think about it, that's one of the most liberating things imaginable.
You guys have anyones autograph?
Found this the other day.
my brother gave me a signed copy of taipei for my 19th birthday
I've a signed first edition of Rushdie's 'the Satanic Verses'
There's an autographed copy of V. at my half priced books here in town. Only $5000.
I feel dumb reading The Order Of Things.
I know it makes sense but I also know French philosophers of the 60s wrote it in a difficult way.
Why were they such jerks? Shouldn't philosophy be as simple as possible?
they're a bunch of resentful obscurantists. don't waste your time

>his iq is sub 120

It's worth it, though if it's your first "serious" read, it's gonna be tough. I really don't think philosophy is supposed to be as simple as possible, what made you think so?
Significant contributions towards the formation and evolution of National identity in your country. I'm not talking about fascist literature (though it's not excluded)

uhm... what did you say you needed this for again?
>national identity
So I got memed by /lit/ (definately not again) and just aquired this book.
I love to study a book and take notes - mostly because I read to see others (philosophical, if you will) insights.
How do I go about taking notes for this friend?
go fuck yourself, my main man
The first step is throwing this edition in the trash and buying the 20th anniversary edition.
just write down your thoughts as you read it. I'll be doing this when I read Zarathustra later this year.

Do you guys have any tips for reading long books?
The longest book I've read from cover to cover was House of Leaves. HoL was probably closer to like 350-400 so I don't think it really counts as a long book.
inb4 pepe copypasta about reading 5 pages a day

Are you afraid of not appreciating the book? Or enjoying it to it's fullest?
If so:
Read short-stories, plays, poems. Try to comprehend deeply the text (do not feel ashamed to google analysis and such).
Eventually you'll be able to understand a lot of the subtleties by youtself.
Then you can read long books and observe the details that are relevant not only to the story, but to the greatness of the book.
The trick is to be able to concentrate and store info for the beginning 'till...
