The do I regret doing the most
Is the time I did the do
While waiting for a God as patient as a tree,
I was covered by reproaching flies,
Noting the rust and dust of waiting, breaking me.
I was rousing when my garden entreated me,
So I watered my groves and plucked their prize.
While waiting for a God as patient as a tree,
I wander collecting ripe figs for a royal We.
Tearing them I see, in meat, these evening skies
Noting the rust and dust of waiting, breaking me.
I must, I must shake this dust from me!
My urgency was met with resounding sighs.
While waiting for a God as patient as a...

I lay awake, bereft of thought;
Not a single ponder; I careth for naught
I sleepeth away my time, carelessly in a Lilliputian loft;
The void caressing my very essence, I wait for expiration
I await no emendation, for my time has passed;
Tuck me in, let me die
Who is the better author?

In terms of world building, general complexity and writing style its Tolkien
In terms of plot and intrigue it may be GRRM, but his series isnt finished yet, so it is not the right time to judge
>>8113094
Martin has a very grotesque writings style though. Tolkien never resorted to shock value.
Have a place for an English Literature degree but having second thoughts, thinking of changing. Is it useless and should I just read what I choose in my spare time?
>>8132737
Will you be paying money or taking on debt for this degree?
>>8132750
Yes, although it's a UK student loan so only paid back relative to income. It's likely I'll pay about £10-20 a month of future earnings
>>8132754
That's an unrealistic figure for a monthly repayment. However, a degree is still worthwhile. I did a philosophy degree and now I don't work in a related field at all, making good money, but I wouldn't have got my job without my degree.
so I've been reading the more obscure/not popular authors you guys like to talk about. I've noticed that most of their books are well written but just don't amount to much. it's made me think that these authors aren't more popular simply because they aren't very good. if their books were better they would be in a different place. instead of being so rarely read. I honestly need to stop reading these guys because I'm disappointed every time. the books in question are.

The only one I've read of there is The Recognitions, but you're wrong in saying it doesn't amount to much. It wears its themes on its sleeve very clearly and is a very entertaining book, very funny and tragic.

It's because of feminism. They are pushing YA and genre fiction to breed out whiteness

"First paragraph of The Cold Six Thousand are as follows: 'They sent him to Dallas to kill a nigger pimp named Wendell Durfee. He wasn't sure he could do it.' If that offends you, fuck you, put the book down. If you think I'm a racist, fuck you, I will not justify myself and say 'I am not a racist' because anyone who would say something like that sounds like Richard Nixon saying 'I am not a crook."
so what?

For what purpose?
Do you read Wikipedia articles to get an overview when you're about to read something complex?
I trust 40 random people writing an article for me as much as I trust 40 random people making me a sandwich.
That being said if you follow the citations is a great place to get sources for facts.

The Tunnel is such a depressing book. A perverted 90 year old man reflecting on how small his dick is and how much of a worthless piece of shit he is. Does he have anything more upbeat?

Did Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy leave you unable to continue with life due to its brilliance?
Is it the best book series ever written by man?
Were you moved to tears by jokes about towels?

it was the first book I enjoyed reading that felt like it was mine bc my parents thought it was dumb and my friends didn't read it/talk about it with me bc their parents let them play violent video games

you have to remember that it was written in the late 70s. the radio series on which it was based was pretty radical at the time. truthfully some of the jokes haven't dated particularly well but i will always be a fan of the first three books in the series.

Can erotica be /lit/?
No, sex is disgusting.

It CAN be, but the only example I can think of is De Sade.
Yes.

I don't know what the fuck is going on in this scene. Literally can't read. There was no flat screens in 86' what did he mean?
>Arnold flipped a toggle. The air in the yard seemed to catch and hold, forming a flat screen, then a box that enclosed the grassy area. It rolled a bit, as if the vertical hold were out of synch, but Arnold adjusted it until it held steady.
>>8131884
Just let it go friend, you'll live
It's not a flatscreen it's a screen that is flat.
Sounds like he's operating a device that changes the shape of the air. Like the atmosphere collapses into a flat plane, then expands into a box.
