A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Anyone wanna discuss it? I was at /tv/ recently and had myself goaded into discussing the merits of Gandalf's character. As it turned out, I have some rather negative things to same about the guy.
I wouldn't mind some discussion on this, because I used to really like that character, before I started digging into it.
Page two already.
Let's have some OC.
Gandalf should have been portrayed as a villain. He isn't fighting for what is right- an extremely nebulous notion given the greater story-line- he's fighting an old foe from many wars before, a foe that was once his brother. Gandalf is playing every side to get what he wants. Lee's character is just doing what he always did, trying to maintain the old way of things. That old way being what happened after the really big wars decided things, a thousand years at least before. Gandalf is a loose cannon. He...

Well, I guess nobody cares about children's literature here.
Time for some more OC
Have you read The Silmarillion? Gandalf is old school, man. He's seen literally everything happen in that world, he was there before
his boss made the world. He's conservative to the utmost. He's a manipulator who's personal agendas couldn't be understood my men, let alone elves. He lies to everyone, manipulates everyone, in order to best his old rival. He doesn't fucking care about shit anymore. Saruman did though. He had seen a peace in the...

I couldn't even find it in the catalog this time.
Time for some more OC.
Gandalf could have just given the Ring to the elves and let them kill the Enemy, he always knew exactly where it was. But he didn't. He let the weakest of the weak do his dirty work. And in effect, removed the world of the best it had- the elves said fuck this we're going to home and taking our ball with us. And left the world in a mire of shit with people like you and me to sort it all out. Why did he do that? Because someone told him he couldn't, that it should be done...

There is absolutely no way i will ever, ever, read this awful piece of trash.

I don't read anything above a 4 because you know the mass of plebs is jacking up the ratings. Also anything with more than 10,000 reviews

I know this is bait, but fucking kill yourself.
Moby Dicky is literally the best novel in the English language.
/lit/ is for the discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction), short stories, poetry, creative writing, etc. If you want to discuss history, religion, or the humanities, go to /his/. If you want to discuss politics, go to /pol/. Philosophical discussion can go on either /lit/ or /his/, but ideally those discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works to which posters can refer.
Check the wiki, the catalog, and the archive before asking for advice or recommendations, and please refrain from...

Why can I only get through, like, five pages of this book at a time?
It's not like I don't want to read it, but it's a really heavy read. I can't bring myself to read more than four or five pages in a single session.
What do, /lit/?

Mason & Dixon or Gravity's Rainbow? Which is Pynchon's better work?

Please respond to this poll, even if you have only read one and not the other. I think with enough responses this could be fairly enlightening.

I've read both. I prefer GR, but I think they're about about equal in quality. I prefer the time period of GR over the time period of M&D which is why I prefer it. The last section of M&D is the finest Pynchon I've ever read, though. That whole section, the Hsi and Hso story, and the story of the Worm are my favorite parts of M&D. My favorite parts of GR... I love it all, so it's hard to say. I found the end of the Tchitcherine and Enzian storyline to be fucking great. Slothrop's journey to get the package of hashish was great, the British...

The old is new once more.
I finally did the unthinkable and posted my short story on DeviantArt.
Could I post the link to its chapters here so you can give me some criticism? It's a very short and sweet fantasy story so it won't take much of your precious time.
Or post it chapter by chapter here? Or something.

Did /lit/ like Dial H?
Whats /lit/ think about comics anyway?
Are they seen as inferior to prose round these parts?
>>8277816
Mainstream comics are for manchildren. There are some manga/comics/graphic novels that are equal to modern literature. I was deeply moved by the anime Ping Pong and the manga Kokou no Hito. They are actually experimenting and trying to break new ground using effort rather than imitating the canon or trying to appeal to millenials like a lot of modern lit.

I agree that picturebooks are the correct format for socialist preaching, but I've reached the age where I'm looking for something more sophisticated.

What is /lit/s opinion on Klosterman?
I haven't read his books.
I read that book last year and don't remember a single thing about it. It was a few essays or collected articles I think
I read Sex Drugs and Cocoa Puffs. It's like really really watered down DFW, desu.
I read 50 pages of But What If We're Wrong and wanted to shoot myself in the foot. He has no intellect.
It's scary how much I identify with this book
Mom's gonna freak!
so what do you guys think of the book? i'm reading it right now. i loved the movie and i'm loving this one.
this is actually the first book i'm reading in the lit starter kit, next one is 1984.

Reading The Temple of the Golden Pavilion and having read up on Taoism has gotten me interested in Zen Buddhism.
Does anyone have a chart on what to read (or can anyone recommend a path)?
I checked the wiki and tried googling but couldn't find anything.
