Any other "Dying Earth" authors to read besides Jack Vance and William Hope Hodgson? Gene Wolfe was pretty cool too.

Martin.
Not even shitting on you,
>Dying of the Light
it's really good imho
>>8206800
I like some of his short stories quite a bit, Meathouse Men and The Ice Dragon are top tier as is Sand Kings along with Dunk and Egg, people just seem to dislike him due to how popular ASOIAF is. I really hope he pumps out some more dying Earth stuff in the future.

What's more important to become a successful writer?
>reading and researching a lot
>writing a lot and learning from yourself
>studying writing theory
>????
The first two, as well as observing people and events.
>>8206663
Writing well
you have to both read and write a lot. i mean a lot.
>studying writing theory
tripe.
Fuck this book ;_;
>>8206624
Can you post in spoiler specifically why fuck this book? I remember it was a good novel, nothing spectacular, but a pretty story written well enough, but I'm particularly biased because the person who made me read it was my first girlfriend who was killed a couple of years after this, and about a year after we broke up.
Oddly enough, I can't remember much of the book now.
>>8206649
Oh well sorry to hear anon.
I particularly liked it because I have an interest in Spain around the time of the civil war and this is a really well-written coming of age story with dozens of sub-plots and interesting characters with the Franco regime as the backdrop. As a kissless NEET the romantic parts got to me hard. Maybe I'm exaggerating cause I have not read that many novels
>>8206661
Spanish anon here, i haven't read this book yet maybe i'll give it a try.
How much does it go into detail about the social and political situation of the time?
I think this might be cool.
Post an evocative and not meme picture and write a 60 word story for it. greentext is ok. I'll try when others post.

Čedomir rushed - as most things out of necessity of war - the consummation of his emotions towards Cvijeta. Consummation is the only certainty in which a man need not faith as it will come and for him consummation materialized over sharp metal screams out of the absurd cruelty that meant nothing.

How is this book for beginners? I want to start reading.
>>8206541
If this is the first book you're ever going to read, I think it might be a tad simple.
Have you considered Harry Potter instead?
>>8206546
Not a big fan, i'd like something that will get me thinking, it doesn't have to be sci-fi. Someone recommended me this book and I was wondering.
>>8206541
It's good. Short. And will definitly make you think.
Recommended.

How long did it take you to make a sale from the time you published it?
I've been thinking about trying to get on the porn train by writing more niche stories (incest or something), but I don't know if it would really be worth it for the most part.

Why dont you reappropiate some books if we are all paying for them anyway?
Stealing books is retarded when you can pirate them, which doesn't hurt anyone.

I have the same problem. Either early in the morning or late at night. Or, bring a chair with you to a beach. Place the chair in the shallow end and keep your feet in the water. Or go to a library.

No one on /lit actually reads books. They just rant about them
I became an avid reader like three months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time on 4chan anymore.
Here's how I did it.
-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person
-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure
-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult...
