Anyone read this? If so, what do you think of it?
>>8211308
I read it at 16 and was scared to death of being caught reading it. I thouhgt the ending was pretty soap opera tier. I was very closeted myself so I could definitely relate to the protagonist, even if he was an unpleasant character.
>>8211308
the ending soap opera tier? how's that?
it was gay

Discuss the idea of the Ubermensch?
Nietzsche was a good guy.
All those with tragic insight are not so far from becoming Ubermensch. The only difficulty being maintaining buoyancy in a world such as this one.
To literally WORSHIP Nietzsche. He didnt want us young, budding philosophers to do this, but He also wants us to THINK FOR OURSELVES!
It is to meld the unconscious and the conscious via experimentation and inquiries of lucid dreams. But to be used for right, not wrong.

from what I'm seeing, you're using those books as intended :^)
What books would you say pervert your mind to the furthest possible extent of perversion, breaking beyond the idea that perversion can only be a sexual act, there's obviously different ways of perversion.

I've heard that one before. I actually felt great comfort when I read this book, it was relaxing and it felt like I was floating through a dream. I know it sounds weird but I actually put it down half way through because I was afraid that it would stop feeling like a dream and I wanted to come back to it another time to really savor it. i don't think that there's really anything that corrupting about it, it didn't have especially disturbing content, it just had a bunch of piss sex, and believe me...

The Vegetarian by Han King. G
Guys what the fuck does this mean exactly -
"Where there are ends distinct from the actions the results are by nature superior to the activities"
your actions should have a purpose
>>8210968
Can you explain how you got that?
>>8210971
"the ends" in the original is telos, so it can mean purpose here. making the end distinct from the actions means the actions themselves shouldn't be the end (i.e eating for the sake of eating). so when you do something with a purpose the results will be better than if you just did something willy-nilly.

Yo guys, I've been on a major Star Wars kick recently and have gotten pretty interested in the EU. Can anybody make any suggestions about where to start? There's so much EU content and I've there's a lot of shit you need to dig through to find the pearls
Thrawn Trilogy is generally acknowledged as the best I think
99.999999% of the EU is complete ass though
>>8210878
How much have you read?
>>8210878
Thrawn trilogy as actually kind of ass writing-wise.
I recommend Wraith Squadron (Rogue Squadron should technically be read first, but Stackpole is a hard sell and Allston is generally more engaging), Stover's Shatterpoint and RotS novelisation (single-handedly redeems the flick), Luceno's Plagueis, and Jeter's Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy.
What do you learn from studying English in university that you don't from reading on your own?
I like reading (mostly modern and contemporary novels), but the requirements, essays, critical theory, etc. that you deal with seem like a pain in the ass.
>>8210870
Critical theory will make you a better reader and writer by dispelling normie illusions about authenticity, talent, (self-) expression, etc. It will also change the way you read, for example, Eliot's objective correlative may change your attitude toward literary unity.
Essays make you a better writer. Practice makes you a better writer. Requirements make you read good things you would otherwise have skipped, but requirements won't make you enjoy those things.
this image makes me want to /r9k/ myself

how to write about what you read
This has to be the single most enjoyable piece of ancient work that I've read. Pure style.
When I was younger I didn't appreciate it as much and thought it was rather boring, but after re-reading it in Latin I must say nearly every paragraph is precious in it own way.
