along with Inherent Vice, might this be the rebirth of literary kino?
>>8225771
That book was trash, and I don't expect the movie to be any different.
>>8225796
The book is excellent, actually, but a lot of Roth's books have film adaptations.
Lol of course they show the explosion right at the start of the trailer because that's what gets audiences interested
Any books that explain how buddhism and stoicism are similar/related?
yes
Why Buddhism and Stoicism are Both Bullshit For Pseuds Who Want To Look Deep Without Intellectually Engaging with Anything

Why is this considered a great book? And why it took years until it gained popularity?
it's cleanly written, self-aware but not obnoxiously so, and the theme of life being a constant stream of disappointment resonates with this generation, also, marketing.
>>8225738
>cleanly written
Explain this meme. When is it a merit, and when is it a flaw?
>>8225772
It's a flaw when it doesn't compliment the novel.
Is it generally worth while to take writing classes?
>>8225584
No.
>>8225584
Yes.

How the hell did Harry Potter become so successful?
>>8225568
Because it was for ten year olds. Stop making this thread.
Victorian nostalgia themed fantasy that allowed children to easily imagine themselves stepping into the world. The books really arent terrible as far as childrens books go and theres nothing wrong with having fond memories of them. The Young Adult defebse force assholes claiming its equivelant to high literature are cancer tho.
Easy story that came at the right, allowed people to growth up with it and as time passed, tackled deeper and darker subjects. Also likable characters, and did not focus exclusively on a love story, but rather how to endure and overcome the hardships of our life.
can good prose be translated without losing it's value? why or why not?
could be, but reading lit writen in same language you are using is more valuable to you
I claim translations can be superior to the original work.
>>8225560
It is about removing the self or 'cleaning the glass' between the author and the 'objective' (it's more complicated than objective/subjective imo) reality they are describing
have you ever cried in front of someone /lit/?
write about it and post here
/lit/ is for the discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction), short stories, poetry, creative writing, etc. If you want to discuss history, religion, or the humanities, go to /his/. If you want to discuss politics, go to /pol/. Philosophical discussion can go on either /lit/ or /his/, but ideally those discussions of philosophy that take place on /lit/ should be based around specific philosophical works to which posters can refer.

this is encouraging people to write something, and it's not the first thread to do so newfriend

other than when very young?
What are some good books about grand archaeological-esque adventures like pic related? Dan Brown's stuff come to mind but I've been lead to believe that his work isn't particularly good in a practical literary sense. You can shit on me all you want. My skin is thick.
King Solomon's Mines
>>8225425
Why would you dismiss Dan Brown's works, when they're more intelligent than the writing in your pic related.
bumping cos I wanna know too
>no one on this board read taipei in the original taiwanese
>plebs think they can discuss tao lin by reading him in translation
lmao @ ur lives. pathetic.

wow, very such funny post OP. made me top kek. thanks for this
quality post anon, these retards wouldn't understand
Would you anons be down with pen-paling? We can limit one or two people to each person and I'm assuming everyone here is willing to write. Maybe exchange throwaway e-mails? Talk about books or something? It can work out.
>>8225260
The ubermensch me would be but instead I am a piece of shit. Write back soon
Your friend,
Jk rolling otflmao
I've tried it before but i just got a weirdie. I'd be willing to give it another go tho
I like all kinds of lit tho i have a Modernist tilt, am heavy into music (jazz and world music lately), education, etc
I'd be interested.
Not sure but I might be a "weirdie" like
>>8225297
said. I'm not lolsorandumb, but I think I might be on the robot spectrum (but I had a gf, I'm not a full wizard. Maybe a sorcerer).
Your friend,

Is this poetry or prose?
>>8225205
Fragments of notes not designed to be assembled as a novel.
There are semblances of poetry and prose, but ultimately just notes
>>8225211
so it is fiction? like a fragmented attempt for a novel?
>>8225205
Could hardly care, I just love opening it at arbitrary pages and start reading
/lit/ criticism thread.
there wasn't one up, and i feel like there should be a constant general for this board.
recently i noticed i'd slacked in my writing habits, so i forced myself to start writing at least one thing a day, be it a stone in the pond short story, a small poem, anything. to try and branch out, i've started forcing myself to write in different niches and styles and here's something i would appreciate honest criticism of.
not reflective of my genuine work, rather a stylized piece of how i imagine this pseudonym would write.
why are you autists posting jaypegs of text now instead of using pastebin? how am i supposed to greentext the shittier passages?
>>8225123
i genuinely don't know, i only recently started frequenting the board and the last criticism thread i saw had adopted this styleand i wanted to fit in

Thrillers that are actually very good. I'd say Red Dragon, Silence of The Lambs and Hannibal.
Any other good recommendations?
>>8225116
Or any crime recommendations? Books which you'd assume were shit but then somehow aren't?
I'm reading "Depraved
the shocking true story of America's first serial killer"
So far it's not too boring. It's started to get good and it's just the beginning.
This "pharmacist" had relocated to Chicago, built a 3 story sprawling building that became known as "the castle." It was essentially designed as a fun house of confusing hallways, traps, and a cellar with things like a stretching rack, surgical implements and he had built a kiln that was perfectly sized for human bodies.
I just loved this...
