Hold me, /lit/ ;_;
can you make a post that isn't in memespeak

Sorry about the ending, anon. At least they had a little bit of time.
>>7331772
I just am at a loss for how to feel. Like, I get thatshe had to die at the end,but why?
Hey, /lit/, first time book writer here with a question. I am getting rather close to finishing my very first novel. It's a horror piece that I've been working on for a year and a half now. Before I try to send it to publishers, I'd like to do a little check off on everything I'd need to make it a perfect story. So, in short, could you guys and gals throw out some literary concepts to make sure I have them in my book? I don't want to seem like some kind of amateur.
Pic somewhat lit related, it's Nyarlathotep, a Lovecraftian monster.
Will reading your book affect me in a meaningful way?
Can I walk away saying, "After reading Anon's book, I learned -----."
>>7330505
So the theme/ moral? Yup, I've got that covered. Any good way of driving it home? Like, I hear people discuss novels like, "Oh, Mr. Bla's book covered themes of revenge and lust," yet how do they really make those themes prevalent? Simply making it a large aspect of the plot and the characters?
>>7330508
I'd say so.
Try to think of your book in as simple a way as possible.
When you boil it all down, what words do you use?

this meme is getting out of hand

>argues against the long-taught theory that human civilization started in ancient Greece, defending its origins as coming instead from Africa.
Nobody to my knowledge has claimed human civilisation comes from the Greeks.
It is claimed that Western civilisation comes from the Greeks.
>George G. M. James demonstrates how some of the greatest Greek scholars like Herodotus, Hippocrates, Aristotle, were actually influenced by long-held Egyptian philosophy and...

Any recommendations for modern Chinese or Taiwanese literature (preferably from 1900 onward)?
I looked for a Chinese /lit/ chart, but couldn't find one.
I've read Ha Jin's Ocean of Words and enjoyed it quite a bit, but I guess I consider his work to be more Western in style.
Thanks in advance.
>Chinese and Taiwanese literature
>Not the same thing
Gweilo pls
>I looked for a Chinese /lit/ chart, but couldn't find one.
Then you didn't look hard enough
>>7330441
I know they're not. I'm asking for both Taiwanese and Chinese literature.
I've looked at the wiki. Can't find what I'm looking for. What are the essentials for someone who wants to start on Greek mythology?
>>7330430
What, to read? Bullfinch or Hamilton. The stories were all oral tradition forever then they were collected. Ovid's Metamorphoses if you want an earlier lyrical version of the myths.
>>7330434
Yeah, to read. I know the stories and the characters (Medusa, the Minotaur, Achilles, etc) but I don't know why I know them. So I want to read the source. Thank you for the info and suggestions.
>>7330434
Just checked them both out. Exactly what I'm after. Thanks pal. Much appreciated. /thread
I'm about halfway through this and so far it's just the same old DJT. Very vague but very blunt. His ideals and philosophies are a little different than mine but that doesn't really matter. He believes competition to be the base of education by supporting charter schools. He makes a very bold statement on pg. 54 saying, "I'm not as concerned about the kids growing up in wealthy communities, where high property taxes have allowed them to build great schools, hire the best teachers, and provide all the supplies they need. Those schools are doing fine."...

Well we all know it but no one mentions it.

who is this mayo sprayo?
why does /lit/ hate murakami
He sounds boring
He's sounds like That Feels guy as an author.
Why would I want that?
His books range from mediocre to bad.
He has no notable characters, no notable plot lines, no notably good prose.
Plenty of notably bad prose.
Just about to finish this book anybody read it? If so what are your thoughts, tomorrow I'm starting book 2
Snape kills Dumbledore.
>>7330291
I enjoyed a lot, book two is a big step up, I feel. Both books follow a similar pattern in that they're slow in building and then the endings are chock full of twists turns and revelations with implications that are resolved or will be resolved in the next book.
I'm looking for some fiction literature on human nature
After white fang you get a good idea of the instinct and nature of wolves, and I'm looking for something like that but with humans
Any ideas?
I have an idea: Never post that reddit tier 'funny' picture ever again.
>>7330303
Thanks for the help
We'd need a book written by wolves to really understand humans.
How to make your protagonist interesting and not generic?
>>7330161
Think of an interesting story.
give him a ter(hic) - a termi(hic)-nal case of hiccups(hic)
>>7330161
You don't.
The protagonist is just a lens through which the reader experiences the story. If the protag is too distinctive, the reader will not identify with him and will never really feel any sense of immersion while reading.
Should I get a Kindle? Which one?
>>7330157
No
The shiny one.
I got a Paperwhite right before last Christmas.
I have always been against e-readers, but I've saved a decent chunk of money by downloading books I'm not sure I want to buy.
It does have its own set of problems.
Like how I read Infinite Jest on it and had no idea how close I was to the end of the book. And then I turned the page and found myself in the Notes and Errata.
You should have seen the look on my face.
>>7330157
If you can get a used kindle touch, its basically the paperwhite without a glow screen. You could probably get it for under 50 used, and i have had mine for years, and treasure it.
Just saw this at the bookstore. Checked the archives and no-one on /lit/ had made a post about it previously, despite the fact that it was released several days ago.
Wheel of Time is not lowbrow and transcends genre. In /lit/'s formative years, Wheel of Time was an extremely popular and entertaining topic of discussion. What happened to /lit/? Why is every single thread now about 101 curricula and anything ignored by academia is ignored by /lit/?
The Wheel of Time Companion says Bela survived, btw.
fuck off
>>7329954
>Wheel of Time is not lowbrow and transcends genre.
Both of these are bullshit. I read the first or so before I had enough. It wasn't the worst thing I've read but it didn't transcend shit.
I don't know which is worse, the kids on here that just discovered "serious literature" and throw a tantrum every time they see anything genre related or the genre lovers that try to elevate their favorite books to something they will never be and never tried...

What's your IQ? I don't mean this as an insult, it's just that I've found that sub-gifted types don't really understand the Wheel of Time fully.
Discuss the likes of Faulkner, O'Connor McCarthy and Twain here.
To start us off, what does /lit/ think of Wise Blood?
Hazel Motes shows usthe importance of trust/faithwhilst Enoch shows usthe importance of being loved.
Also why do you think Motesblinded himself?
Bummp
can we shorten this to /slit/ and make it an actual thing
>>7330308
Setting up a separate women's lit board would be apartheid.
Hey /lit/, I'm trying to explain the benefits of getting a PhD in English at University. I've tried to say my thoughts but I am afraid that I may miss something crucial in my explanation. What would be a more simpler way of helping him understand?
>>7329910
maybe you should start with what benefits you think are there first?
>>7329916
I was thinking about that but he was more or less asking from an objective standpoint. He's not that well versed in the world of literature. He's more scientifically and mathematically oriented.
Seriously, can anyone help? I know I sound like a whiny bitch but, I've been at this for awhile now and he can't go beyond simple ideological reasoning for why I am doing it. In his mind a STEM degree is more beneficial and I don't think he had that much knowledge or respect for the liberal arts.
>They call me Hogg because a hog lives dirty. I don't wash none. And when I get hungry, I eat my own snot. I been wearin' these clothes since winter.
