I fucking loved Rant and Invisible Monsters. His ability to recognize human desires and then to twist that until it becomes something unrecognizable is wonderful, his experimenting with style is fun, and the monotone drawl of his text is my favorite thing. But he's accessible to "normies", so /lit/ thinks he's stupid. I don't know, maybe it changed, but when I was on here, everyone scoffed at his name.
His biggest downside is that once you've read 5 or so of his books, you just can't deal with any more.
Can you guys recommend me interesting books that you would say have had a strong impact on your lives?
No fiction preferably, pic related did it for me.
inb4 New Atheist nonsense shitposting
I'm not trying to make a thread about religion or atheism, this book helped me because it mapped out some truths about consciousness and meditation to me.
have you heard of richard dawkins?
I recommend "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins.
Did you know he also invented the word "meme"?
7 books, 7 goddamn books for a nice big "fuuuuuck youuuuu" at the end.
Thanks Steve

The only reason why my girl is not as praised as other female writers is because she didn't write from a feminist perspective.
Prove me wrong.
>>7371601
Basically. No hardline, lifelong virgin religious zealot is going to be the headliner in a university class dedicated to making girls feel good about their decision to pay tuition to party and talk about feminism.
O'Connor was extremely talented, but doesn't fit the narrative.

Reading this after some /pol/ threads on the TV series caught my interest.
So far it's fucking retarded. This is alternate history that a 6th grader would have thought of.

I have read that book, it's retarded.
Not worth reading honestly.
Also, I don't remember anything about space nazis.
>>7371565
Try to read it as propaganda from that universe.
Have you ever read a book just to impress someone? We're all anons here....
I've never actually done this, no.
Only myself. Nobody else is worth the effort.
Nah.
Though I wouldn't put it past myself if the grill I was to impress was legit 10/10 both physically and mentally.
what are some writers who had literary successes in their youth (ie before 25) BUT before they wrote their first novel?
I can only think of Yukio Mishima
I'm asking because I don't want to peak too early ^^

Fuck off.
If you're genuinely curious search the archive with (including quotes) "was 23 when". A list of greentext will appear which I, in my autistic glory, have previously compiled. The fact you haven't bothered to create such a list yourself can only suggest you lack the genuine curiosity and investment necessary to be a great writer, let alone a precocious genius.
>Shadow had done three years in prison. He was big enough, and looked don’t-fuck-with-me enough that his biggest problem was killing time. So he kept himself in shape, and taught himself coin tricks, and thought a lot about how much he loved his wife.

Reading this just disappointed me so much. Someone who's opinions I trust told me about his "Sandman" graphic novels. I haven't read them yet but I was looking forward to it until I read this. Now I'm scared of what Neil thinks makes a good story.

What does /lit/ think of John Updike? Do you prefer his novels, stories, poems? Does his literary criticism carry any weight?
I've always seen his name pop up in anthologies, his work is always lauded and admired, by I've been underwhelmed by the (admittedly) small amount I've read by him.

Why do I always do this to myself /lit/? I feel like a predisposition to not work and stay up the night before is somehow very connected to this board or its culture. All the burnt out academics.
