what are some philosophies or texts that help with fear?
That depends on what you are afraid of.

Fear and Trembling :^)
I hate this whole modern "less is better" approach to writing and I really wish to write a huge maximalist 900 page novel but I find it extremely hard to write anything longer than 5000 word-long short stories. How do you even go about writing a large novel?
>>7392772
Be very smart. Read more.
>>7392772
Read more 900 page novels.
See what they do?
I don't know.
Why does it matter how long something is? Just write something good and let the piece decide how long it should be.
>>7392772
Good luck with that in 2015. You think anyone is gonna read a 900 page or greater novel from here to any time in the future? The epic is dead.
I need advice /lit/...
Should I have sex with a ugly girl just for the sake of my novel?
So I know this girl, she's 19, a 4 or 5/10. Not fat or dwarf or anything like that, she's just ugly. She's a nice person, likes art, likes good music, has a pretty libertine thought, bohemian... You know what I mean. I know she has sexual feelings towards me, since we've gone drinking a couple times and we've ended up making out when I'm totally drunk. She actually told me once "I want to suck your dick". To be honest, I don't have...

Just rape some pretty girl in an alley.
Get into a relationship, realise you love her, then let her go. Live the /Lit/ life.
Is metaphysics the biggest meme of all in philosophy?
>>7392756
Metaphysics is a word used to discribe what someone is blindly speculating at when talking about some interconnectedness to life that isn't restricted to what's observable by material science. I don't even know what you mean by your question. "Metaphysics" as a label fits on a lot of what theoretical physicists do also. The fact is that the big bang, creation, what have you, is not causally consistent with itself as we now understand it. So when trying to answer it from the human perspective,...

Anyone have any tips for making up a pseudonym that actually sounds like a real name?
>>7392711
Think of a first name.
Think of a last name.
Done.
You fucking autist.
Thanks for the pic of Stewart, though. She's fine.
>>7392721
The names that came to mind as I read your post were "John" and "Smith." One of those is already my name and together they are a shit pseudonym. Thanks for nothing!

is there any real reason to get an english degree in an american university at this point

English major here. No.

I want to go to school to get an English degree but I know it will be a waste of money.
What's the ideology where people want to go back to nature, or they believe that mankind has strayed from its "natural state" and must return there if it is to be happy? Is that called a thing?

It's called Filthy Hippieism.

Honestly /lit/ how poor is Penguin when it comes to translations for philosophical works?
Take Plato, how poorly does Penguin treat his works?
Mostly they are fine. Good for English texts, but they can carry some good translations.
I never read any of these but I frequently heard the translation is awful. However, I wouldn't care too much about Plato and other philosophical texts as long as the key terms aren't butchered and work in verse—like Virgil—should never be translated, it loses all its sense. Eventually find a version en vis-à -vis with both the original language and a annotated English translation.
Plato's Aeneid is my favorite philosophical text desu

What do you losers think of these?
I personally cannot vouch for Kobos, but I just copped Amazon's base kindle for 49.99 as part of their Black Friday deal. If the Kobo can do what Amazon's kindle can, I would recommend it (when the kindle isn't on sale because it seems they are the same price, retail).
I love my kindle paper whatever the fuck it's called. You can get free books through torrents and project guttenber... no one can tell what you're reading... it's portable... the highlight and vocab saver are awesome too.... does my run on sentence make you buttmad?
btw does anyone have a kindle search tool for free books?
My uni dissertation is going to be on the topic of villains, so I was wondering if we could get a discussion of villainy going? Not asking you to write it for me, but it'd be nice to have ideas to bounce around.
>What makes a great villain?
>Who is the single greatest villain in literature, in your opinion?
>Which novels/films would you recommend I check out for their villains
Whatever thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated lads
>>7392114
comic nerds seem to love dr doom cause he is a well written villain or some bullshit, idk never read it but you might want to check it out.
Blood Meridian has a good villain imo. The ending was meh, but throughout the rest of the story i enjoyed how The Judge was written. He always had a strong presence and everything he did held an aura of mystery around it.
For shit villains, try ASOIAF. Tywin Lannister is quite obviously modeled after whatever Chad F. Normal called GRRM fat in middle school
