How's /lit/ doing this morning?
I've been up since very early this morning reading A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick. Just finished it a few minutes ago and might start Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said in a little while.
What's everyone eating/drinking for breakfast? I'm about to make a cup of coffee with cream and sugar and maybe have some Shreddies.
What's everyone doing? I'm going to be looking for work for most of the morning, and after that maybe do something like watch a movie. I was thinking of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. That...

It's summer down here so it's supposed to be scorching hot, but for some reason it's a nice rainy weather today.

Rio.
Pick a Bible verse that fits with this man or his works
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
"damn"
And Jesus wept
Is there a comfier book than this one?
A gf.
Read it earlier this fall and I loved it so much I'd have to say it's my favourite book, now. Yes, it is very comfy.

A stuffed animal.
I use too many academic words instead of speaking plainly. I want to learn how to speak in "plain" or "clear" or "common" or "simple" english.
What should I read?
>>7420244
watch tv
>>7420247
I get that tv is simpler but just "watching tv" exposes you to exaggerated and overly emotional words. It's one-sided.
>>7420258
Not if you watch documentaries.
What are your thoughts on this?
I don't know yet, but I've heard good things. I'm asking for it for Christmas.
>>7420175
how old are you?
I've not heard of him, but my host-father gave the books rave reviews
how come /lit/ doesn't get smarter over time?
if you've been on /lit/ for a long time, surely you're aware of the idea that this is a pretty sophomoric board, mostly pretentious undergrads. but this has always been the case. "/lit/ has always been shit".
but shouldn't the original undergrad population of /lit/ already have graduated? or are /lit/izens a rolling demographic, bleeding out people, and acquiring new plebs at sort of equal rate (which would explain the permanence of some threads).
idk, what's the deal?

The pseudos either grow up or stay pseuds, and new pseuds show up fairly often.

Over time, you post less on /lit/ and just lurk.
Would anyone care to discuss Alan watts work? I would preferably like to exclude those who are verbose just for the sake of it.
Has anyone read his complete works?
Did it register as just another great read, or was life a little different afterwards?
First book of his you read?
>>7419942
Overrated second-rate wannabe scholar-guru. His "work" on Zen and Buddhism in general is considered mostly nonsense by modern scholarship.
There is a joke about how you can tell a fake western "buddhist" from a person legitimately interested in Buddhist scholarship and practice by whether they take Watts seriously or not.
>>7420119
spoken like a man who has never taken any serious amount of psychedelics in his life.
even such tools cant help you if you're already a tool
>>7420119
I think that's pretty unfair. Alan Watts was my segue into genuine Buddhism. Alan never professed to be a "buddhist scholar." He was admittedly an entertainer. All he was striving to do was take concepts and ideas from eastern culture (not just buddhism) and try to package them to a western audience that had little familiarity with eastern thought. He was helping to give dissatisfied Americans a new perspective, one that might potentially lead to a healthier and happier understanding of their lives....

I just finished with the last of Dostoevsky's works that I could get my hands on. I think he's truly excellent and really enjoyed every single one of his books, even the slightly less respected works.
What novels/authors are similar in tone and material to some of Dostoevsky's works? I'm really after something similar to catch my attention.
>>7419871
kafka
>>7419876
Which would you recommend to begin with? Thanks, by the way.
>>7419876
Yeah, this, Kafka overtly said he thought of Dostoevsky as "a blood relative", and that his work was heavily influenced by him.
Has anyone finished this? I had to make the decision for my mental health and future eyesight to put this down about a quarter of the way through. I really enjoy the prose, but how can I overcome a feeling of inferiority that this massive novel instills on people? Is it even worth reading?
>>7419778
How the fuck did you get your hands on a copy?
>>7419778
Hey fuckstick, don't make a thread and don't answer. Jesus fucking christ.
>>7419779
Not him, but I got lucky and scored a library copy off of Amazon for 13 dollars.
What's the opposite of "not?"
verily
A negation of a negation is an affirmation. Not not is is.
undoubtedly
>want to try reading and researching on my own
>finally hits me that my education pretty much ruined me
>read 2slow
>comprehension is shit
>notes are garbage
>doze off
>considering suicide
How do I apply myself?
Fall in love.

This is greatest brocom in all of lit. Rivaled only by Don Quixote and Huckleberry Finn.

I'm pretty sure any book that involves preteen boys fucking a hen qualifies as a pass.
>>7419545
This. Talked my gf and grandmother into reading M&D and they both think it's mostly boring. It's just too male-centric for women to empathize with well, the same way I don't get into Pride and Prejudice or Housekeeping.
You have 1 minute to disprove solipsism.
>>7419531
fuck you
>>7419531
I find it aesthetically displeasing and choose to reject it.
>but that's solipsism!
Deal with it, nerds.
Without other people all you'd be is a floating consciousness without an identity.
