Given how Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same day (the 500th anniversary of which is coming up next year, 23 April 2016, so mark your calendars), I'm going to say it was he.
None of them had that much impact on the language. Obviously Cervantes is the most influential on the novel.
please help me /lit/, I'm trying to describe to a girl how Dostoevsky's understanding of the human consciousness is timeless and how situations in his novels reflect the actions of modern day man but I can't think of any examples

Suicide is often looked down apon as selfish, stupid and careless -- but should someone have the right to end their own personal life, without the judgement of others?
Why is suicide so often romanticised, particularly by writers and artists who partake in other mediums of personal expression?
Have you ever had anyone close to you commit suicide? Did it change you in any way?
Just do it.
The argument that suicide is selfish is always pretty funny, because they're essentially saying "you should endure for MY benefit."
>>7439530
>but should someone have the right to end their own personal life
Of course.
>without the judgement of others?
I'm not sure 'rights' can even be extended to include such a thing. All you can do is try to sway people toward a different view on suicide, but you cannot restrict how they are going to react.
>Have you ever had anyone close to you commit suicide?
Yep.
>Did...

ever stumbled upon old stories you written when you were younger that now made you cringe?
I found a paper I wrote with a story about a girl who killed herself after getting engaged. Her finance was obviously heartbroken. I don't want to get into details about it. I sincerely hope no one ever set their eyes on it. I was probably 14 when I wrote it.

I've been building on the stories I've written and thought about since I was younger. I've read my early concepts when I was a kid and I either cringe or find it adorable.

I need books on neuroscience so I can feel justified acting selfishly. Rationally I know there is no reason to not be entirely selfish but not everyone upstairs is on board with this idea. However a few nights ago I reached this strange equanimity after watching a program called The Brain with David Egelman on PBS. It was a relieving sensation, like having my spooks of free will and karma stripped away and leaving in place a coldly rational mind, ready to act with absolute parasitic self interest and without the interference of compassion or even resentment. I need to rekindle...

This can't be anything more than a semi-creative b8 thread.
Can someone help explain this? Particularly how it is metafiction? I am confused because I typically think of metafiction as the structuring of the narrative or text playing some unwonted role in the narrative. While a lot of weird, self-referential and metaphysical stuff happens, I am uncertain how any of it is metafictional. I certainky expected De Selby to appear at some point. Otherwise I am unsure exactly what I was meant to derive from reading this, other than the usual blurring of the lines between fantasy and reality and commentaries on questioning the efficacy of empiricism.
>>7439167
You were supposed to laugh and be entertained.
At Swim, Two Birds is metafictional.
And, I don't see how De Selby's commentary questions the efficacy of empiricism. There's a is a lot of quantum mumbo jumbo though, but that seems to be bad writing.

>I am uncertain how any of it is metafictional
I think At Swim-Two-Birds might be your only man.
Hey /lit/. Is there any author who has done a novel on international conflict the right way? Not just WWII and stuff like modern and or futuristic. Only guy comes to mind is Turtledove but that guy is pleb.

Just realized my current major of music education has no job security even though it's my passion and I'm sure I'll regret leaving it for the rest of my life, so I'm looking at becoming a reading or writing teacher preferably teaching high school.
How many reading teachers are there on /lit/? What's it like?

Living at a toxic waste dump might not be all that great, so I'm gonna go live in the landfill.
They're equally bad, job-wise, so you might as well just do what your "passion" is, given the two options. Or you could just go for a third option that is reasonable and in demand. Or not, whatever, it's your life.
