So far it makes sense. It doesn't paint WHITEY DID IT or THE NATIVES OR X ARE STUPID
reddit's askhistorians have a bunch of posts explaining why each chapter of ggs should be read with care.
People post this 3 times a week here, imagine in leldit. The consensus is: Jared Diamond is a hack.
Dear English Lit students:
Does it ever bother you that we’re studying a dead subject? Like, it’s depressing to think we’re studying the thoughts of dead people. I don’t need to tell you that the market for English Literature jobs is not good. With the sciences, there are new breakthroughs all the time and all those discoveries are regulated by a rational, tried and tested method. That's the complete opposite of the humanities. Our so called interpretations are jargon at best, and what little credit English did have in the realms of philosophy will soon be...

Wow, really? Being entombed in my own corner of the humanitarian latrine, I thought they did pretty well. The more you know.

new sincerity avant la lettre
not the best writer but a lot of passion and enthusiasm and he gets it across well, both the happy and the sad parts. big sur is a legitimately great novel.
top lad
>>7532876
the only thing I know about Big Sur is the following quote:
“I have tonight begun reading a stupid, shitty book by Kerouac called Big Sur, and I would give a ball to wake up tomorrow on some empty ridge with a herd of beatniks grazing in the clearing about 200 yards below the house. And then to squat with the big boomer and feel it on my shoulder with the smell of grease and powder and, later, a little blood.”
~Hunter s thompson

Words of a jealous narcissist to be honest. Thompson is a meme writer compared to Kerouac.
I became an avid reader like three months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time on 4chan anymore.
Here's how I did it.
-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person
-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure
-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult...

>I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure
This never happened though...
I will keep asking this each time you post it: what's the joke here? The only thing remarkable is the 5 pages a day bit.
I've been off /lit/ for like six months, aren't there any new memes?
How do I stop subvocalizing?
>how to be a worse writer and reader for the sake of speed
Son, you what.

Has anyone read this?
Yeah, but it's been a long time. I remember I enjoyed it.
I've had about four false starts with this. I can't get past forty pages or so. Literally nothing is happening.

these new artsy/ minimal covers are shite
aside from the camus covers those do a good job of telling the reader what to expect
I have a $100 gift card to Amazon, I've read almost nothing as far as your foundation for general lit goes, what do you recommend?
American Psycho
Some Thomas Pynchon
I suppose a few classics (Lolita, Catch 22, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
Honestly the /lit/ entry core is bullshit, just get in the habit of reading literature, not young adult.
Also avoid penguin editions if you can, they fall apart rather quickly
>>7532513
yeah not a bad suggestion. i just gave a coworker of mine an old paperback of catch 22. i figured its a good way to get someone into stuff with a little more substance.
OP you would probably enjoy david foster wallace. maybe Mccarthy if you want some stuff with a little more "Oomph" (blood meridian is an ultra violent western and all around classic) Don Delillo is also good and White Noise is fairly easy to read and deals with some interesting themes.
oh and Kafka. Definitely read some Kafka.
/lit/, I come to you in a time of need.
For reasons which I cannot explain here, I am doing a project, in which I have to create something which represents the theme of a book of my choosing, me being an idiot, I chose Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged".
Thing is, only thing I know about this book is the first hundred pages, after which I started reading chemistry textbooks, and the classical epin ayn rand memes, this is due in two days.
Please /lit/, I need your help.
Create what specifically? Anything? A video? A paper? A diorama?
>>7532357
My instructor didn't explain this very well, she said we could create pretty much anything within reason that represents the theme, I had an idea, for a railroad game of sorts, a railroad must travel on a track which splits into multiple paths, the conductor must choose which path to go on, one path representing his self-interest, the other representing the interest of the passengers.
Kinda autistic, but, you get the idea.

Have a game where it's yourself against the rest of the class. Whoever wins gets a candy bar if they cross a particular threshold of points (lets say 25). Basically have a succession of choices that are either/or, with you either benefiting yourself in points or benefiting the class in points. Ask the class which choice you should make. Argue that it's in your self interest to make the choice benefiting you. When they say that's not fair, tell them that's the rules of the game, and since you made...

He hasn't finished Winds of Winter, and it's not even his last novel.
It's been taking him an average of 7 years to complete these books, and it gets longer as he gets older and more distracted by fans, cons, events, award shows, publicity, etc.
Face it /lit/, he will never finish A Dream of Spring. You really think he has 10 years left in him? By that time Game of Thrones, the show, will have had 10 seasons (or less), will have been cancelled, and will have been loooong forgotten about.
You will never know how the greatest series of all time,...

You haven't been on /lit/ long enough if you think /lit/ cares at all about asoiaf. All we get are a few annoying /tv/ posters who visit seasonally depending on HBO's schedule; otherwise, gurm gets about as much attention as any other fantasy writer.
And... The seventh season of GOT will be the last.

Is that why there are 5 threads that are to do with GRRM and ASOIAF on /lit/ right now?
You just can't admit that ASOIAF is a legendary book series, and that it's better than your philosophical shit.
I mean really, name me one series that has managed to keep up with nearly or over 1,000 pages in each installment. That's right, there are none other than ASOIAF.
Post your face when you realized Big Brother did nothing wrong.

What about the faux wars they waged with the other autocracies of 1984's earth; how they dumped resources into a self-perpetuating black hole. And everyone was in on it.
