Hey /lit/,
Let's play a game. Grab the book nearest to you and turn to page 17. Write the first complete sentence on the page in the thread, see if you can determine what the books are using you're superior pseud knowledge. I'll start
>How many times it happened to me-well, say, for example, to feel offended, just so, for no reason, on purpose.
"After taking my bath, I turned back to Milo's lodging and made for my bedroom."

Infinite Jest?
----
>Come evening he tracks a spire of smoke rising oblique from among the low hills and before dark he hails up at the doorway of an old anchorite nested away in the sod like a groundsloth.

Notes from the underground.. luckily i just read it last week.
heres a tougher one:
About this pageant: it had one peculiar result. It brought the Gettysburg Address of Abraham Lincoln to the attention of Goebbels, and then to the attention of Hitler himself.
>how did this get started
>how many number of people contributed
>how long did it take
>who profits from this
Also I find that this song is a good theme for it:

What are some writers that talk about the practical benefits of state religion and acknowledging religiosity?
After all, the whole discussion about the truth-claims of religion is ultimately irrelevant, what's needed is an analysis of what religion represents, how would people have a unified morality without it, etc. These are important questions.
>>7613466
Pretty much anything written by Catholic priests?
>>7613478
I was hoping more like something where it would be discussed how a society without religion would continue, if it would even be possible and finally, worth it from an utilitarian viewpoint.
>After all, the whole discussion about the truth-claims of religion is ultimately irrelevant
In what universe are you living?
>What you believe in doesn't matter, just so long as you believe in something for our perceived "betterment" of society
I close my eyes and see a flock of birds. The vision lasts a second or perhaps less; I don’t know how many birds I saw. Were they a definite or an indefinite number? This problem involves the question of the existence of God. If God exists, the number is definite, because how many birds I saw is known to God. If God does not exist, the number is indefinite, because nobody was able to take count. In this case, I saw fewer than ten birds (let’s say) and more than one; but I did not see nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, or two birds. I saw a number between ten and...

Not so long ago I was keen on reading it. Couldn't find it anywhere but I got myself Hogg's Justified Sinner which is also a gothic classic.
Adaptation thread.
Novels you'd like to see adapted to film and the actors you'd like to see in the roles.
I'll start:
Suttree
Sut: Brad Pitt
Harrogate: Giovanni Ribisi
J-Bone: Jason Issacs
Joyce: Marisa Tomei
>>7613209
Harrogate as a 40 year old man?
>>7613226
He looks relatively young, and I think he's usually typecasted as a Harrogate type anyway.
>>7613248
what'd you make of the ending?
Is there a replacement?
>>7613176
The bibliotik thread has tons of sources.

So I just finished Childhood's End. What is /lit/'s opinion on it? Personally, I can see why Clarke is considered one of the sci-fi greats.

It's a prophecy.

Does anyone know if the critical edition of Mein Kampf is only available in German for a reason ? (I'm not asking /pol/ because I didn't understand the second half of the book and it's been bothering me for a long time)
Because it's written in German and published in Germany? It's not rocket science, kid.
What do they mean by critical edition?
Is it censored or did they just comment certain things?
>>7612812
The critical edition has a lot of annotations and explanations. It's honestly poorly written and requires a lot of background knowledge to fully understand which is why this is published by a historical institution

My goofy grandmother gave me a gift card to Barnes and Noble. What should I buy and why should it be The Wealth of Nations?

"Private"... aren't they full of FBI?
I paid a visit to the only two bookstores in my town earlier today, ( Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million ) but neither one had a decent copy of the Silmarillion. So I'm going to order it off Amazon. I'm looking for an edition that has some great illustrations, similar to The Children of Hurin. Which publication should I purchase?
folio soceity
So I really want to read this Polish book called The Peasants in English. Any of you have any experience with it? Which translation should I be reading?
I don't think you could translate our specific peasant dialect and atmosphere, but OK, you can try
Boryna is typical polish janusz
>>7611941
