That is no country for old men. The young
In one another’s arms, birds in the trees
—Those dying generations—at their song,
The salmon-falls, the mackerel-crowded seas,
Fish, flesh, or fowl, commend all summer long
Whatever is begotten, born, and dies.
Caught in that sensual music all neglect
Monuments of unageing intellect.
An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress,
Nor is there singing school but studying
Monuments...

IHAVEdrunk ale from the Country of the Young
And weep because I know all things now:
I have been a hazel tree and they hung
The Pilot Star and the Crooked Plough
Among my leaves in times out of mind:
I became a rush that horses tread:
I became a man, a hater of the wind,
Knowing one, out of all things, alone, that his head
Would not lie on the breast or his lips on the hair
Of the woman that he loves, until he dies;
Although the rushes and the fowl of the air
Cry of his love with...

Hey /lit/, I don't visit this board often, but I took a class last semester called 'Native American Literature' as a fulfillment of my Humanities requirement for my uni and enjoyed it much more than I had expected.
So if you have any favorites or recommendations for books by or about Native Americans, I'd love to hear them and your thoughts on them.
We read:
'Lame Deer Seeker of Visions' by John Fire Lame Deer
'Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven' by Sherman Alexie
'Custer Died For Your Sins' by Vine...

I read a book called Blue Highways by William Least Heat Moon who was a Native American author. The book only partially touched on Native American life, a lot of it was just him wandering through various small towns in the United States. Well written and worth a read for a pic at small town Americana in the not so distant past but still very different pre internet days.
Also Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee gives a depressing but accurate account of US v Native American Wars and the long history of the US Government...

Thanks, I appreciate it. From what I've seen /lit/ seems a lot more welcoming than most boards I visit, but of course there are cunts everywhere
>>7635827
Sounds interesting, I like the sound of the fact that Blue Highway doesn't pigeonhole the story into being about Native American life just because it's by a Native American, ya know
anyone else think this is his weakest work by miles? even the rap book was a better read
>>7635315
better than pynchon
?I thought this probably his best
>>7635323
Classic!
Newfag here,
What are your thoughts about this book?
>>7635244
complex political issue reduced to false dichotomy, tedious prose style, weak characterizations and understanding of human motive
just imo of course!
>"fat" clearly readable on cover

Let's get a biography thread going! What are the best biographies and who are the best biographers?
I'm currently looking for a biography of Toussaint Louverture. Would appreciate any recommendations.
Taking some liberty with the genre classification, you may want to check George, Nicholas and Wilhelm: Three Royal Cousins and the Road to World War I, by Miranda Carter
"Olivar Asselin" and "Colette" are the only biographies I have ever read.
One is about a french canadian journalist who, despte his quite advanced age and statut as a french canadian surrounded by englishmen, still rolled with it and fought on WW1. He was one of the few french canadian to actively participate in the war and most likely the reason frenchies got out of the british Commonwealth.
The other is an european author, who wrote a popular novel serie, starring Claudine, a young student who likes gay inuendos. What's interesting here...

Should have majored in English, Literature, Great Books, or something else in Humanities. Sure, you'd have no job, but you would have the sense of personal fulfillment you now crave.
nice meme
I must admit, I generally find them irrelevant in the 2010s. Stuff like On The Road, etc. they aren't too bad, but life now is very different. There are always going to be defeated / tired elements in each generation, but this stuff isn't that relevant to us now, I think.
Pic related. Probably what Jack Kerouac got used to seeing upon entering rooms, for a year after the release of On The Road.
Guess that answers THAT question, then.
what's up with this guy?
I don't know, I don't get it.

Need help, I read a series of books a while ago but now I cant remember what they are. Basically some bad dude is going to do something to a kingdom and a hero must go find rings guarded by a dragon and each book is about each dragon. I cant remember much more about it, any help would be appreciated.
Actually just found it, Dragons of Deltora.
No idea but it reminds me of Mother 3 for some reason, where you have to pull seven swords from the ground to awaken a dragon that will either destroy or fix the world depending on whether the swords are pulled by the good or the evil.
Death, be not proud is my favorite poem I've ever read. Does /lit/ have any recommendations for similar ones?
the rest of the holy sonnets obviously.
you can also read his earlier stuff which are just really cerebral/convoluted ways for donne to convince women to sleep with him, not quite in the same vein as late-life metaphysical donne
andrew marvell and george herbert are the other two big metaphysical poets.
>>7637530
thanks anon, I'm checking out the rest of the holy sonnets right now! Any recommendations for similar stuff from a different time period too?
>>7637564
depends on what aspect you're most intrigued by.
subject matter (life and death, overcoming it, etc.), try stuff like:
-On Time, milton
-When I have fears I may cease to be, keats
-Ozymandia, shelley
-Sonnet 55, 60, 73, 107, shakespeare
-Do not go gentle into that good night, and death shall have no dominion, dylan thomas
Should I get the Nabokov translation or another?

so is this worth reading? local shop has one copy left
>>7637354
Yes nigga, buy that shit.
FUCK THUH JAPANESE
Yes. Also if you don't enjoy it's pretty self contained so you don't have to read the other three to get any feeling of completeness.
Any bad book in this list ?
Notes from Underground
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Dubliners
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
>>7637308
Jekyll and Hyde is a bit underwhelming, worth reading only really because of it's influence on later works
>>7637308
I agree with the first comment, Jekyll and Hyde was a bit underwhelming.
Thank you for the answer
I would also like to have comment on Typhoon of Conrad
Can someone explain to me why Felica Day is adding pictures of herself to a book she didn't even write?
