How do you feel about Raymond Carver? Do you like him? Why?
He fine. I like him as an american Chekhov influenced writer. I mean, minimal everyday themes, weak and pityful characters... his concise prose ain't as good as Chekhov's tho and maybe Chekhov portraits them characters in a more universal mature way, while Carver sometimes kinda falls for the "muh dirt muh scum muh white trash" meme; although, when it comes to that theme, I'm glad we got Carver despite Bukowski.
he's one of the only authors books I like.
I was kind of disappointed when I found out the minimalism was often just his editor's doing though.
I like the ideas more of dietpepsi minimalism or kmart realism, it's probably about the only thing I'll ever be smart enough to write.
thanks for remind me of this op

Right now I am writing this.
I've got about 10,000 words on a disappointing holiday. In the previous criticism thread I responded with constructive feedback to every post that had contributed. I'll do the same again here. Haven't had any feedback yet.

I've been asked to read some short erotic poems at a small-scale literary event. Any suggestions? I was planning on doing some historical stuff, preferably with a lighter undertone. Please share!

Awful!
Some of Horace's erotic odes. Plenty of them, all very short.
Why is PHILOSOPHY
such a SAUSAGEFESTmy m8 says it's the party arky keeping womyn-writers from being first educated then published but i think that is not it. i think it's more a certain love for the quantifiable and hence amassable (bitches, knowledge, power) inherent in men and missing in women. i think a big factor is conquering truth itself by persuading your folks to accept your philosophical terms and quirks (which have to be the biggest, baddest terms and quirks around) by means of being slightly smarter or at least more cunning than your barrel...

It isn't, there have been a number of female philosophers - sure they aren't all household names, but they are out there.
>>7644101
every field involving extraordinariness will be dominated by men for more or less the reasons you gave
also just distribution of ability which results from the factors stated (more male retards; more male geniuses)

Sounds like you're projecting your mommy issues OP
Hello /lit/
I went to my local used bookstore today and I found some Star Wars books. Im sure that there are a lot of terrible ones out there, but I also know that there are some great ones. I figured this would be the best place to ask around before I went to /co/ and /tv/

For me it is descriptions of food, I have never understood a love for food. To me, food is something that keeps you alive. The only pleasure I find in food is the knowledge that what I am eating will help me in some way. Masses of food are revolting.
>>7640339
Describing food in literature is crucial because it helps to convey the nature of the two parties meeting to consume it together. Eating in literature is incredibly important because it's one of the most intimate things two people can do, yada yada yada. Have you read "How to Read Literature Like a Professor?" (I believe it's on even a lot of high school required reading lists here in the US) and this is a pretty basic, intro level quality to writing, anon. Most of the time, a description of food...

Do not speak to me like a child. I have no problems with using meals and food to convery certain ideas, but I dislike descriptions of food for the sake of converying the enjoyment of it.

I'll speak to you as I see fit, anon.
Based off your pet peeve, it sounds like you read YA fiction or genre fiction more broadly. My point was that if you were NOT reading YA/genre fic then you more than likely misunderstood the intent behind it as "whew, this iz tasty grub!"
What do you guys think about authors who don't use quotations for dialogue?
I know of only Joyce and McCarthy. I feel like they work, but why?
saramago
Beckett's novels
hey aren't necessary really
>tfw reading books pirated and buying them after i'm done to keep as trophies

people will give you shit for it but whatever. nothing wrong with having a physical object to help you remember stuff/commemorate something you've read. also sometimes a good conversation topic when people visit your place.

Why the fuck are 260.000 people interested in this person's recent YA lit purchases?
Side question: why are book trailers a thing? Moreover, why are reactions to them a thing?
>book trailers
why would anyone give a fuck
