▶What is dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia is a complex neurological disorder characterised primarily by difficulties in coordination, memory, perception and organising thoughts, and physical symptoms such as mild allergies and hypotonia. Other learning difficulties such as dyslexia are often comorbid. Dyspraxia can affect literally every aspect of an individual's life.
▶How common is dyspraxia?
Lack of awareness makes it difficult to pin down an exact number, but in the UK it is estimated to affect about 2-5% of the population to some degree. However, the severity of the symptoms, and which symptoms dominate, vary wildly from person to person.
▶What should I do if I think I may have dyspraxia?
Read more at dyspraxiausa.org (USA) or dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk (UK), for starters. For a diagnosis, you may be able to ask your doctor to refer you for an assessment, though in the UK there is currently a lack of trained specialists on the NHS and you may have to go private and find an Occupational Therapist with a background in the condition. If you are in the UK and cannot afford to get a private assessment, ask your student office about the Access To Learning Fund, which may be able to fund a private assessment for you. Search online for organisations operating in your area or contact the Dyspraxia Foundation's USA or UK branch for further guidance on resources and options for physical therapy.
Dyspraxia is both one of the most complex and one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, and yet if you mention it to many people they'll think you're mis-saying 'dyslexia' and will have never heard of it. Spread awareness of this life-changing condition so that we can extend the hand of acceptance and so that others trying to find out why they struggle with so many everyday tasks may find the answers they are looking for.
