It's been 3 years since Yeezus was released and it is quite possibly my favourite album ever.
This album is like a drug. It begins with liking one song usually one of the more accessible ones like Bound 2 or Black Skinhead and this then grows to liking a few more until all of a sudden the whole album just hits you. When it first hit me I could not listen to anything else. Legitimately no other music for about a week. Still to this day I listen to it more than anything else and it still feels fresh and interesting and a long way ahead. As Lou Reed put it in his review it's on another planet. From the powerful contrasts between emotion and aggression which the production mimics as such in Blood On The Leaves.
Many criticize the albums lyrics as being weak but I think they are often very veiled lyrics that are not as direct as his prior music and are thus criticized more. The whole album follows this clear plot of the life of 'Yeezus' and the lyrics help to reveal the lifestyle this individual follows from drugs to alcohol to sex to eventually finding love.
In terms of production this album is astounding. Listen to the track I'm In It. This track isn't taken seriously due to the subject matter even though it follows the plot of the album. This track however could be the best production I have ever heard. I can't even explain it. From the way the drums crash and change so abruptly and mimic the vocals fitting so perfectly it's just incredible.
There's a million more things I could go on about but I'll leave it there. I genuinely believe this album is perfect and a masterpiece and it terrifies me that Kanye created this in weeks and that he has hidden away multiple other versions that Rick Rubin says are just as good yet very different.
I want to discuss the influence of this album and the influence to come, your thoughts on the album 3 years later as well as a general discussion of the album it's themes, production etc.
