Girlfriend just dropped a bomb on me. We've been together for a couple years. Talk long term but in a distant way. Been good though. Really do love her. She just got interviewed by cps asking if she'd take in her brothers kid. Gfs' brother has a criminal record and is currently working in another state in oil field work. Brother/father-of-the-kid called her saying when he gets back in town no matter what we do he's gonna try to fight for custody. He never gave it up officially but the drug addict kept him away and he never paid her much in child support out of spite. We'd just be foster parents until that but could be longer since I don't think he has that great a case. If gf says no they're gonna ask the drug-addicts' sister next and if she says no after that it seems kids just left to the open system. Pressure from the family aside gf is gonna say yes she tells me. Just wanted to let me know. Honestly, I think you should try to take care of the kid, because his other options aren't that fucking good (and you are familiar with him), and later when it comes up, fight for custody, because you don't want him to end up in the system, Jesus fuck that is a bad place for a kid.
It's sudden, and you may not be entirely ready for it, but it's as good a time as any, you could be his last family he has, aside from the father, who sounds kind of like a bad option.

No not an asshole at all. That's a large part of my thinking. She describes it as at most a few years fostering. She thinks her brother is gonna come back and take over within a year. I'm thinking it'll definitely be longer than that since he's a bit of a flake. But she says I don't know him like she does and the only reason he never paid child support was because she was an addict but he'd send him clothes and toys and take him out when he could.

She's not near low income enough with a kid for food stamps but she says she'll be ok financially with this. She's getting a raise by fall.

The real problem these days is that connections are made by cell phone these days. I was born in 1984 and I grew up on BBS (basically internet before there was internet). You're probably right that communism isn't coming, even in the age of automation. There are so many social, political and economic hurtles to overcome that it will be impossible especially since politicians can't do shit. This is coming soon and not in the time period we expect. Most us expect it to happen when full fledged AI is developed, but basic mass automation will come sooner. Somewhere within 20 years I expect.
As for Sex Robots... That is very far off in the future and people will still prefer organic flesh to a mechanical contraption. Until, we can build a perfect "slave" made of flesh and AI, it'll be a while.
