Based off what I've seen, he wasn't that religious, and stated he was a member of both Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS. All three groups hate each other and fighting each other, Hezbollah is Shia and Al-Qaeda and ISIS are Sunni. I had considered an angle like this, but some of these people being interviewed hardly seem credible. It's a national headline, so I'm sure numerous people are going to claim to have known Omar only to get their 15 minutes of fame.

People interviewed also claimed he was touchy about the subject of religion, and that he pulled a knife on another guy for making comments that could be perceived as rude. (toward religion)
Despite /pol/'s attempts to ascribe some kind of "liberal media" cover up of Omar's religion, those interviews have been covered by a number of news sources, as well as the fact that Omar sword allegiance to terrorist groups.
I'm sure religion played a role in it, but I don't think he was actually involved with any known terrorist groups. The FBI hasn't uncovered any evidence to support this. It seems more likely to me that he was brought up on fundamentalist values, and was extremely conflicted with his sexual orientation as a result.
