How does /lgbt/ feel about video games? Do any games you play have /lgbt/ characters in them?
>>
/v/ is my primary board.
I've never bought or not-bought a game based on the characters orientation. The only game I've seen portray a LGB character well was New Vegas. Arcade Gannon isn't a token gay, rather it's a detail you learn after lengthy interaction and is handled quite well. Modern Bioware shit writes their queers in such a way that they might as well be gargling cock instead of talking; it'd drive home the same message.
>>
>>6418519
>do you play videogames?

No, I'm an adult
>>
Never paid mind to who my characters are fucking.
I always pick men in fighting games, NEVER WOMEN. not because i'm into man-ass, which I am but i'm just like that.
I like twinky boys but they dont feature often in fighting games.

Id fuck benimarus botty tho, sexy man.
>>
>>6418519
lgbt characters are almost always universally shit and shoehorned in there just for some token minority points.

if I so specifically wanted gay characters I'd play a dating sim.
>>
Who else romanced Kaidan here?
>>
>>6418519
A lot.
The only ones I remember were ME and DA, and the gay characters were put there for muh tolerance.
>>6418559
I've always preferred to travel alone in Fallout, so I never actually noticed the gay stuff. I heard F2 had gay companions too, and that was like 20 years ago.
>>
>>6418602
Are there gay dating sims though? I only know about Coming Out On Top. There are some that are in Japanese, but I don't know moonrunes.

I can't name any good lgb characters off the top of my head, but I do have to give an honorable mention to Kanji from Persona 4. Even though he turned out straight, his struggle was handled well.

Literally every hobby is childish

Watching other people throw a ball is childish
Watching people put makeup on and pretend to be other people on TV is childish
Cooking food with expensive ingredients when you can just buy a Subway sandwich is childish

Literally everything people do for "entertainment" is childish, trust me, your hobbies are just as stupid as video games

Uh no, sports bring out the best in human cooperation and spirit and are good for you both mentally and physically. Unlike gamers, athletes lead healthy lives and are beloved members of their communities.

Literature may have a high barrier of entry, but the rewards in an beautifully crafted masterpiece such as Infinite Jest are far deeper and rewarding than the plot to any video game.

Cooking often involves preparing food for others, it is one of man kinds oldest skills and has been cherished for all time,

Gay characters are incredibly rare in video games and when they are included it's usually super gimmicky (ellie from last of us) or are completely unlikable cookie cutter characters (life is strange) the only good gay/bi Character imho is kanji from persona is kanji (in the Japanese version of the game it's less ambiguous about his sexuality, and even his voice actor confirmed his non straightness) even then most of the fandom vehemently deny he's anything but straight, overwatch is also supposed to have lgbt characters, but they'll most likely take the easy route and only have boring lesbians

Dragon Age Origins has a bisexual cutie elf twink. I would always play as a big as fuck human male so I could pound dat ass and make Zev bite the pillow. And he wasn't the only same sex romance option, either.

Also, Jade Empire has a lot of same sex romance options too. In fact, there is a threeway option, if I remember correctly. I, personally, unlocked it once. But it turned out to be such a challenge and since it doesn't affect the over all plot in any way I never bothered to again.

If I am remembering correctly, Dragon Age Origins also had a four way romance option, but I never bothered to unlock it because I always concentrated on Zevran. I mean, fuck, dat accent. Unf.

>is mature enough to not sperg on political issues randomly
>is okay with not talking for several minutes at a time (I mean if you're playing for a few hours, it's fatiguing to try and keep up great discussion that long. This makes a lot of people uncomfortable)

Guild Wars 2 has quite a lot of lgbt characters compared to other video games. The entire Sylvari race are usually by default bisexual with notable examples such as: Caithe and Faolain, Eladus and Dagdar in the Green Knight storyline. There are two female lesbians Kasmeer and Marjory that are in a relationship, which is revealed when Marjory is attacked by Scarlet Briar. There's also the MTF NPC Symon who transitioned to Sya.

A sport is mindless exercise combined with, yes, a GAME, from which all of the cerebral aspects of the practice come from.
Literature is fundamentally a passive experience wherein you sit back and enjoy consuming, creating nothing, solving nothing.
Cooking might be worthwhile but not in the form practiced by most-everyone, wherein they thoughtlessly follow instructions.

Games - the worthwhile ones, anyhow, rather than action-driven dreck - are about making difficult decisions. Solving problems. Being handed vast stark abstract structures and figuring them out. You know, actually DOING something difficult instead of lying back and letting your chosen form of entertainment fuck you in the ass. I think that's worthwhile.

>Do any games you play have /lgbt/ characters in them?

I remember when I would play Saints Row 2, i'd start out as a guy and gradually move the gender slider towards female as I got farther and farther in the game. At a certain point my character had a guy voice with a girl body until i switched the voice to a female one. By the end of the game my character was an asian looking chick with a sassy latina voice. The fact that the supporting characters gave literally zero fucks that their boss was a mtf tranny who transitioned as she took over Stillwater made the game even more comical. Makes the "Did you do something with your hair?" line even better in retrospect.

Fuck I loved that game.

I played Geralt as a repressed gay man in Witcher 3. It got awfully funny after a while of rejecting the red bitch. It hurt a bit more when it got to Yennefer, but in my head canon they turned to really really close friends afterwards.

And Ciri was the daughter he always wanted. She was the only one he truly opened up to.

Too bad Geralt isn't bi. I could see him banging femme elves on the side.

Bachelor Geralt is best Geralt.

I like RPGs but I hate that romance is thrown in your face. I don't like gay or straight relationships. The only gay romance I liked was in dragon age origins and that was because you actually had to discover it.

I just get so tired of being hit on.

>you actually had to discover it.
Zevran hits on you before you even recruit him. One of the first times you even speak to him you get a flirt option.
It was harder to discover my ass than it was to discover DA:O's gay romance.
Even the infamous "literally forced" ME3 gay romance was harder to discover. At least in that one you have to flirt first before he gets all "target acquired" on your dick.

Yes a brief one. The PC, Zevran, Leliana and Isabela (who can be found in the brothel at Denerim and also is a companion in Dragon Age 2) all have sex on Isabela's ship if you play your cards right. Hardly anyone does this because you need to have Leliana 'hardened' through her companion quest and the correct dialogue, plus who keeps two rogues in the party at once?

I don't care about gay characters, I care about well-written characters. If those characters happen to be gay then that's great.
Don't get me wrong, I support representation, but tokenism isn't the way to go about it.

Unassumingvenasaur has been doing God's work by hacking more gayness into Fates. Some are just copies from male corrin to female corrin, but she's been making great originals too. Great writing, the characters feel intact and it all fits the style well.
And they close the "gay pairs can't have children" thing, which is a godsend. My 3ds is to updated to hack but she's been putting up youtube videos of the s supports.

And the cutest guy in fates
Is Silas, bar none. I wish he came as the gay option, or he and niles both.
>>
>>6422573
Agreed.
But I feel like some companies are doing a great job with well written gay characters. Bioware deserves a lot of credit there, wich is great because they're also making some of the greatest western rpgs of our time. Great gameplay, well polished visuals, intricate worlds, first class storytelling. I'm glad they're the ones devouted to making gay characters and not just fringe indie developers or something.

The second ME was way better, it had both great plot and amazing gameplay.

>Arcade Gannon isn't a token gay, rather it's a detail you learn after lengthy interaction

This isn't to say LGBT characters should be forced to walk around repressing their sexual orientation unless you go out of your way to drag it out of them. There's nothing wrong with that detail being out in the open from the get-go. e.g. The character could have a spouse or partner, much like any heterosexual character would.

What bugs me is when people say a character's sexual orientation (unless they're heterosexual) needs to be "justified" by the plot somehow. What the fuck. It's a completely arbitrary detail either way, so it shouldn't matter whether or not there's some tie-in with the story.

>BioWare

Remember that LGBT themes and characters were explicitly censored in the West not too long ago. They still are to a degree. The reason we're seeing so "many" of them lately is because developers are more free to experiment with the concept due to ratings boards and platform licensing policies finally being more lax about this stuff.

Also remember that BioWare refused to permit same-sex romances in Baldur's Gate II, even though opposite-sex romances were possible. There was quite a bit of fan backlash, but the company didn't give a shit. So there's your so-called "progressive" developer for you.

Some additional reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_characters_in_comics
If you tried to script LGBT characters into your comics, you could forget about finding a major publisher, which meant virtually no retailer would bother to stock your comics in the first place. Nintendo's early licensing policies were much the same way, and the ESRB places similar pressure on developers. The Sims and Harvest Moon for instance both dropped same-sex romance options in some releases to avoid being slapped with a T rating, which might have meant lower sales on Nintendo platforms. (Assuming Nintendo would even permit LGBT themes at the time)
>>
>>6422634
>ME3 was a fantastic game

Eh, it was okay. Most streamlined gameplay, some great quests like Tuchanka, great online. Ending shit the bed though and the game just seemed to try really hard to make your past choices pointless. Then there's that "galactic readiness" meter that did fuck all. You can tell they cut corners everywhere ie. Tali's reveal, what a fucking joke that was. New characters like Chunk Beefrock pale in comparison to some of the crew you picked up in 2. And those dream sequences and the Star Child or whatever his name was pissed me off. My Shepard was a callous asshole and suddenly he's all weepy over some kid getting BTFO'd? Fuck that.
If you like the series it's worth a play but I can't imagine anyone anywhere actually replaying it ever.

PS. Whoever came up with Kai Leng should be fed into a wood chipper feet-first.

Holy shit, who gives a fuck. Find a better way to spend your time than games and comics.

>underrepresented in comics

Most comics do go for token gays. But there's no point in even following that "industry" in 2016, despite what your biased Wiki article may say. most comics suck as literature because they are almost always built around 'hooking' you in for the next issue and condensing a story into a run of 20-page mini-stories. What's more, companies that produce these are liable to cancel your story half-way through so you also have to prepare to end it suddenly at any time. A few writers can create a single story of worth in only 20 pages, but this is bad for sales, so obviously doing so is not encouraged.

comics sell to children, so anything that isn't written for children is generally written to make people feel more mature and smart for reading them. Ham-fisted Progressive or Anarchist political statements, speculative fiction that takes a back seat to cool robot art, superheroes who 'defy conventions', etc. The comics in mainstream that are not simply media devices are held as masterpieces, although the writing behind them is often nothing new in terms of literature and is simply the first time the idea has been brought to that audience.

In terms of the newspaper comics, web-based comics, etc. the same follows. The act of releasing single pages at a time requires something significant or funny on every page, which can severely limit the story-telling potential. Succinct, thoughtful dialogue is what separates the good literature here from the standard gag-a-day strip or plodding drama. Strips like Calvin and Hobbes, Doonsbury, etc. are often cited as the best of these. It's difficult to rate something like this on its literature because there may be 1200 strips, with 1180 duds and maybe 20 really flawless strips. Would that be considered a good comic, or simply a bad comic that created something meaningful?

/v/ was my homeboard for a while, and playing video games is my primary hobby. I don't see it stopping anytime soon either.

I've played games with gay characters in them, sure but it's never a main point of interest for me. I didn't care in Mass Effect and I didn't care in New Vegas.
They always make them feel so... forced to me as well, like I can never believe it or feel like it's part of the character.

You remind me of my ex. I had one of those tvs for years... sheesh.

That sounds cool. I saw a youtuber I like do that.

Now that you've got me thinking about it...

I was talking about your precious comics as a whole, but I guess you're too dense to grasp my point

I swear 90% of this board is children from /v/ and /co/, it's like being in a zoo
