Pride is next weekend in San Francisco. I just moved to Oakland and I have no friends.
I want to go to some of the lesbian parties next weekend, but I don't want to go and just feel lonely (this happens to me when I go to big social events by myself where I know nobody). Plus it would cost like $75 for a round trip Uber (fuck riding BART alone at night when I'm done up to go out).

Okay so for a bit of background knowledge: I was born in Nablus in Palestine, my family is christian though and fled for various reasons when I was very little. I have lived most of my life in Italy but moved to England to study.
Although my family is quite liberal, at least considering Arab standards there has always been a element of traditionalism that has made it hard coping with my feelings of women. I am raised christian but am not a practicing beleiver myself, something I know my father is a bit sad for.
Anyway I decided to tell them the last time I came home for a small spring break. Homosexual witch hunts is not something only limited to Muslim communities in the middle east and it is not a topic my parents and granparents have ever expressed any comofrt with so I was quite nervous, but living on my own by now at least they can't throw me out of a physical home.
But to my surprise they took it rather well. They didn't really reassure me or anything, I can sense that my mom doesn't quite understand what it means, but she became good when I told her I still intend to have children.
Most surprising was my grandfather however. He is very religious, which is why we moved to Italy. He literally wanted to be close to the pope.
I shook his faith but he came back to me after initially rejecting my words and it is him I want to quote because he really touched me.
He said, "I love you more than I beleive god would damn me or you. If I go to hell because I am meant to reject you, my heart, then I will suffer an eternity for that is out of the question."
He said it in Arabic and the translation is rough but he more than anyone really cheered me on. He told me later that he had fled a land that cursed his marriage my granfmother (who was from a muslim family) and that he would lay no such burden on me.
I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of me and I really wanted to share this story so I might encourage someone else.
