There are lots of role models and leaders in the trans community from all sorts of different backgrounds. Not sure who, if anyone, can be called the best. Everyone's different.
One trans woman I look up to is Phyllis Frye(pic related) >inb4 hon. She's from my hometown and she was the first openly transgender judge in Texas. She's been an advocate for the trans and LGB community longer than most of us have been alive and she's helped a lot of trans men and women here with legal matters such as getting their legal name and sex changed.

Sandy Stone is a role model to me. I do hope I get to meet her one day. Her robust, rich life does a lot to inspire hope that happiness and fulfillment can be real, and ours, in many places.
A modern figurehead? Tough call. I'm not sure we should want that to be a thing. Regardless, trans men need to be more actively represented. Their obscurity makes their lives and deaths vanish all too often.

We got a lot of cool role models out there but there probably will never be any real leader. The trans movement is already prone to a shit ton of infighting and splintering. The straight trans girls hate the bi and lesbian ones because of the suspicion and stigma of anyone who even remotely falls within Blanchard's criteria for AGP. There's constant nitpicking over who is and isn't "trutrans". Politics differ by the individual and there's no real consensus on how we deal with the issues we face. The passing trans are bitter towards the non passing trans girls and vice versa. Respectability politics are all over the place and self loathing trans people/detransitioners constantly shit on other trans people to make themselves feel better. The trans guys are mostly divorced from all the stigma, hatred and even the political discourse, because it's so largely focused on trans women. Plus they pass fairly easily because men get less scrutiny for their looks than women do, so they're in their own realm and they often alienated from the community.
On top of all that, you have a bunch of snowflake cis people muddying the waters even more by co-opting the trans label and using it for their own bullshit identity politics. It's a goddamn mess.
