I'm a regular looking and acting dude who happens to not limit who he has romantic or sexual relationships with based on gender. Any not every socialist state or "communist country" was/is anti-gay.
True that the Soviet Union (post Lenin) was anti-gay but this wasn't the case everywhere. East Germany was actually more accepting of homosexuals than West Germany and in the modern era, Cuba is pretty good with LGBT rights in general with state-funded gender reassignment surgeries a thing. Even North Korea with it's insanity, doesn't outlaw homosexuality.

To get this thread back on topic, James Randi is absolutely based.
He's an ex magician who spends his time debunking psychics and the like. He's old as shit, but came out a few years ago. What's cool is that he wasn't ashamed of being gay, just private about it.
On the flip side is Oliver Sacks, who passed away last year. He was a neuropsychologist focusing on perception , including some really interesting stuff on hallucinations.
In his youth, he tripped on acid, rode a motorbike, and did bodybuilding.
Unfortunately he only came out in his autobiography, a few months before he died. It seems like he was really ashamed of it, to the point that his biographer gave up writing about him because he wouldn't let him include it.

The goal of socialism in the Soviet Union was to pave the way for communism. Socialism had existed for awhile before communism, so it's a fallacy to consider them the same thing.

There is rampant homophobia and transphobia in cuba. I am 2nd generation cuban american. Just cause you can get a 3rd rate bottom surgery, doesnt mean its a good place for queers and trannies.
Also, Marx didnt think his writing applied to Russia and was surprised that it was popular there. He saw them as some weird agrarian society, not a capitalist one. He wasnt a "this is a solution for everyone" or "best way to live" type guy. He was a sociologist documenting what he thought was the most likely outcome for the emerging mode that is capitalism.

I wouldn't call him a hero but it makes me happy that Tim Cook is out and one of the most influential and well known CEOs. Michel Foucault and Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolfe are great. I love the letters she wrote to her girlfriend. If anyone likes Oscar Wilde, the fake interview with him on The Dead Authors podcast (hosted by Paul F Tompkins!) is goddamn hilarious.

The best way to not be successfully sued for defamation, damages, etc. is to not do them. The reason they lost the Hogan suit is because their actions were unprofessional and the story was not newsworthy. It wouldn't have been necessary for a rich benefactor to get involved in the first place if they themselves hadn't had backers with deep pockets and made sure to target people who they believed couldn't or wouldn't fight back.
They weren't just sued for some spurious, fabricated bullshit. Thiel's money did not buy a magic lawyer that could get a favorable ruling regardless of charges, evidence, circumstance, etc. They lost because they were in the wrong and they came up against someone who had the funds to challenge them.
