That's awful man, growing up on an estate and being cast out by every group because of general assumptions and things. Its just kids though man, especially on estates, they just breeds hatred for one another.
My school was pretty mixed and my group of mates covered pretty much all races, there were white dudes, black guys, asian guys, turkish boy, all sorts. For the most part race wasn't an issue, it was only the chavvy white kids who'd have an issue with races and because our group was mixed nobody really bothered with us, there were only two times anything kicked off, one guy called my friend a nigger and my friend knocked him out in one hit, then all hell broke loose. I dunno why but everyone who had an issue with someone took it out that day, literally the entire school had a fight, must have been in excess of 150 people on the bottom field going at it. Even teachers got beaten up, it was crazy.
Then after that our group got called to the office, the whole upper echelon on the school were British born white people. Basically, all us white kids got away with it, all the black kids got put on watch and got threatened with expulsion and what not.
But yeah, that's just life growing up I guess, back then you're all too young to know better, there's a lot of it I regret but hindsight makes everyone regretful of the past.

Well it sounds like you're making progress to it, yeah you just need to feel more comfortable being yourself I suppose. It takes time to come into yourself, especially as you're probably leaving your teens now. Once you get to about 21, 22 people mature pretty quickly it seems, I guess now is the best time for you to be making friends.
I wouldn't be too fussed about not making the connection with them immediately though, if you didn't know then in the first place you've got nothing to lose really, so just take it easy :3
Are you bisexual then? You don't have to declare your sexuality to everyone, I've hardly ever just told people I'm gay, I basically just act myself and let them determine it. The only time I've told them is when they've bought up whether I've got a girlfriend currently.
