This just in: concepts and definitions can be fuzzy and exist in degrees.
Even a handful of years ago, transsexuality simply hadn't permeated the public consciousness like it has now. Gender was implicitly assumed to be fixed, so non-straight meant gay because gay was the only non-traditional gender role people really thought about. It remains to be seen how language will evolve as trans issues enter the mainstream. Personally, I think of straight as the word you use to describe yourself if you're not LGBT+.
