Just because it's become acceptable in whatever area the parade is in to hold hands or be out in public, doesn't mean it's like there everywhere, or even that it's like that there all the time.
When I first realized that I was gonna turn out gay, it was a comfort to me to know that these guys could be outrageously gay, in public, on the fucking street, and nothing bad was happening to them. If I was HALF as faggy as these queens, then I was gonna be alright in the little shithole town I grew up in. For the people in the parade, maybe it was just a party, but for me and other people out there in a similar position, it was something to get you through the shit.
