Gay marriage is a solved problem and any opponents aren't in a position to seriously challenge it. The most that's being chased at the moment is 'religious liberty', and to be honest, a lot of the pushback against some of those efforts is playing directly into the 'LGBT mafioso' claims of forced acceptance.
The NC bathroom bill is getting a lot of flak and for good reason, but it's mostly being used as a way to drive Republicans to voting booths because gay marriage isn't the hot-button issue it once was, except Trump has basically eviscerated the party and so it might not even make sense to use the usual dog-whistles.
I've been in a rural hardcore Republican state since birth, my family is entirely Republican, a lot of friends and coworkers are Republican, every single one of them are very seriously worried that the damage inflicted by Trump isn't recoverable.
